Absinthe is an alcoholic drink made from grand wormwood and a range of other herbs. Before wormwood was used by distillers to make Absinthe, the wood was used for medicinal purposes. Absinthe was sold as a medicinal elixir. Some doctors would prescribe the spirit just like they might prescribe other medication.

The name “Absinthe” derives from “Artemisia absinthium”, the Latin name of wormwood and the spirit´s main ingredient. Absinthe traditionally has a natural green colour but may also be colourless. Absinthe was actually invented by a French doctor named Pierre Ordinaire during the 18th century.

Once absinthe started being consumed for recreation, sugar would be added to the liquid to counter the bitterness of the wormwood.
