Aloha Ke 'Ākua! Māhālo nūi lōa for visiting Nā Hālau ʻĀha Hūi Lanakila! We established our Sanctuary for the exploration and awakening of consciousness, the unfolding of our collective creative and healing potential and realisation of our essential Unity. Our teachings arise out of direct experience of awakened awareness and emanates the untamable fragrance of freedom whilst radically embracing the mystery and mess of human existence. Our invitation is for you to open to the fullness of life, to say YES to the totality of your experience and to meet reality with radical compassion. Our doors are an open invitation to all who seek authentic freedom and are willing to meet heart to heart in honest and open inquiry. We were taught that the goal of life is to move through life walking up the mountain of experiences with your Aloha, your Bowl of Light. Life is filled with lessons to learn and teaching moments along the way. When you become angry or jealous, you drop those stones into your bowl of light and those rocks cause leaks in your Mana-sacred power. When your bowl becomes filled with stones, you become a stone that cannot grow. No Aloha! The solution is that at any moment, you can turn your bowl upside down emptying these stones out of your bowl to naturally refill it with YOUR golden light -- your natural Aware and Awakened state of Aloha, your natural state of Divinity. This is the power of Pure Aloha: an Awakened Heart Awakens the Mind. Awakening hinges on your genuine desire for the discovery of your true nature. If it is to flower in you, you must truly want liberation from everything that is false in you, you must want to give yourself totally to the inquiry into what is true beyond all inherited concepts, ideas and beliefs. The purpose of our teachings is to ignite this wanting in you. When the flame of this desire becomes an untamable fire, it flips a switch inside of you and the direction of your destiny is irrevocably altered. It’s like turning on the light only to discover that you are this light. This in itself is extra-ordinary: even though you may have heard the words a thousand times, nothing can prepare you for the naked reality that is revealed. And yet the living experience of this revelation is very ordinary: you have simply re-discovered the innocent wholeness of your essential nature. It’s the you that never was and never will be separate from anything at all. This discovery is the end of suffering and the beginning of freedom. But awakening is just the beginning. The adventure begins, not in the rarified atmosphere of transcendence, but in the midst of the chaos of life. And living the truth of awakening has perhaps never been more of an imperative than in today’s rapidly changing world. The invitation is for you to awaken to the pristine perfection of your inner light and then to fully embody and express this light amidst the mystery and mess of human existence. Come join us!

Strawberry “Mini-Moon” Full Moon – June 9, 2017

Hālau ʻĀha Hūi LanakilaLeave a comment

DON’T FORGET TO WATCH THE STRAWBERRY MINIMOON — June’s full moon is often called the strawberry moon. It got its nickname from the Algonquin Indian tribe because it signaled the best time to pick strawberries. Tonight we will see a special type of full moon that comes only once a year: the minimoon, or a full moon that appears slightly smaller than usual. The natural satellite will be below the horizon for observers in the continental U.S., but early risers in Hawai’i and parts of Alaska will have a chance to see the minimoon at its fullest, weather permitting at 9:09 a.m. EDT (1309 GMT).

Kiho ‘Alu:  Short History of Slack Key Guitar

Hālau ʻĀha Hūi Lanakila1 Comment

ORIGINS OF SLACK KEY (Kiho ‘Alu)
There are different theories about the beginnings of slack key guitar in the Islands. Music is one of the most mobile art forms. European sailors around the beginning of the 19th century possibly introduced Hawaiians to the gut string guitar–ancestor of the modern nylon string guitar.

Mexican and Spanish vaqueros (cowboys), hired by King Kamehameha III around 1832 to teach Hawaiians how to handle an overpopulation of cattle, brought over guitars. In the evenings around the campfire, the vaqueros–many of whom worked on the Big Island, especially around the Waimea region–probably played their guitars, often two or more together with one playing lead melody and the other bass and chords. This new instrument would have intrigued the Hawaiian cowboys, or paniolo, who had their own strong, deep-rooted music traditions. Given the long work hours, however, the Hawaiians probably didn’t have time to learn a lot about this new music.

The vaqueros returned to their homelands a few years later and some gave their guitars to the paniolo. Geniuses of assimilation, Hawaiians wove what they had learned of the Mexican and Spanish music into their traditional chants, songs and rhythms and created a new form of music that was completely their own. Unique Hawaiian musical traditions were the dominant force in this guitar music, as they have historically been with other musical influences that have come from the rest of the world. Hawaiian music never stops evolving, and yet it always remains in touch with its deep roots and inspiration …

The review was so good that I went for it, and it turned out to be very cathartic.  Not as heavy and Authentic as The Borderliners, and not as thorough as The Body Keeps the Score, but very Healing nonetheless.  Expanding.

Tarot Contemplation – The Sun (reversed)

Hālau ʻĀha Hūi LanakilaLeave a comment

The Sun Reversed appears when you lack clarity, or when you are feeling dim.  You may get The Sun Reversed when you are having trouble shining.  You may be afraid of attention or of letting your true nature show.  You may be uncomfortable with praise and compliments.  You might be unable to shake off worry and doubt and have a good time.  Try to get at the upright quality of this card by being in the present and being proud of the divine and unique self you are.  The Sun Reversed can also mean too much of a good thing.  You may be helping others left, right and center and not taking care of your own needs.  Burnout is a big risk.  Or, you may be feeling the consequences of having a good time:  sunburn, hangover, or an empty wallet.  Let this card remind you about the value of moderation.  While the Sun upright symbolizes clarity, the reversed card can indicate delusion and fogginess.  You may be being deceived, or only getting half truths from someone.  You could be deceiving yourself by only seeing what you want to see.  This card can indicate self-centeredness, as in acting like the sun revolves around you.  Be sure to give credit where it is due and to remember that the needs and wants of others are just as important as your own.  You may be feeling good about yourself, and that’s wonderful, but beware of appearing to be a braggart or show-off.  Lastly, this card can indicate delays and setbacks due to bad weather.  Think about having a back-up plan in case of clouds and rain.  So, for today, feel good, have fun and be happy.  Think about what activities make you feel the most content and fulfilled and do that.  Maybe it’s reading a book in a sunny spot, spending time with a dear friend, creating art … it might be helpful to think back to what you loved doing as a child.  Whatever you decide to do, have a wonderful day!

Tarot Contemplation – The High Priestess

Hālau ʻĀha Hūi LanakilaLeave a comment

The High Priestess urges you to trust your inner wisdom.  Spend time in solitude and silence.  Pay attention to your dreams.  Trust your intuition.  Notice synchronicity as you go through your days.  Look for the answers you seek within yourself.  Practice spending time in meditation so that you can hear your inner voice and tune in to your own rhythms.  What you most need to know today, you will find within yourself.  Answers will come to you if you can quiet your mind.  Seek a quiet solitary place and just listen to the voice that comes from deep inside you.
