In many cases, human life ends with death and burial in the ground. Plants are just the opposite. They emerge from the earth and draw nourishment from it. For this reason, many mythological traditions associate plants with birth or rebirth and with the eternal cycle of life springing forth from death.
The magical plant or herb of immortality sought by Gilgamesh, the hero of ancient Mesopotamian mythology, provides one example of how myths use plants as symbols of life and of the healing power of nature. However, because some plants yield poisons and some die in winter, plants can also represent death and decay.
Various trees, shrubs, herbs, grains, flowers, and fruit appear in myths and legends as general symbols of rebirth, decay, and immortality. Some plants have acquired much more specific meaning in folklore. […]

Do you remember what you dreamt about last night? How about the night before?
For thousands of years, we humans have placed a ton of value on the content of these bedtime reveries, deriving inner wisdom and even premonitions from them. Dreaming feels like a birthright, an extra sense that allows us to process both rationally and spiritually while our body rests up.
They are one of behavioral science’s biggest mysteries, with no agreed-upon theory of their origin and specific purpose. For some, dreams occur nightly, but others never experience them at all.
One thing is for sure – many who don’t dream wish they did.
Since I was young, I’ve had them on a regular basis, but have always known there were deeper places to go in this state of consciousness. The quest for many is to achieve the lucid dream, or “knowing we’re dreaming” inside the dream.
The lucid dreamers I know are able to navigate their dreamscape with an awakened mind, asking characters they come across pretty insightful questions about their spirit path. They can run, jump, and fly at will, gaining profound inner wisdom from the experience.
If you would like to dream more at night, and perhaps experience the magical lucid dream, there are three wild herbs that have been used throughout time to accomplish just that.
The herbs below are all 100% legal, and easy to get ahold of. However, please do your own research before trying any of them – herbs are medicine and they should be treated with proper caution. These plants each have a variety of other medicinal uses, but we’re focusing solely on their dream-enhancing effects.
Wild Asparagus Root – Asparagus racemosus
Also known as “The Flying Herb”, it’s believed that wild asparagus root helps one fly through the universe at night, achieving magnificent dreams. The wisdom schools of ancient China placed much
value on dream work, namely lucid dreaming.
In Chinese folk medicine, it is believed that this particular herb has a direct and positive effect on the heart energy, dissolving the dualities that come with our physical incarnation – black and white, left and right, inside and out. This allows our consciousness to blossom into infinite space while we sleep.
Preparation: the best way to use wild asparagus for this particular purpose, is to brew a tea of either the fresh or dried root. Keep in mind that a tea from the freshroot will be much more potent.
Valerian Root – Valeriana officinalis
This herb has been used in folk medicine for centuries as a calming aid, muscle relaxant, and to promote deep sleep. Because lucid dreaming usually requires a heightened state of slumber, it has become a commonly reported side effect of valerian root.
Many also report that valerian greatly improves the ability to remember their dreams. Robert Monroe, a famed specialist in Out Of Body Experiences, once said “Most of us dream, and those who don’t simply are not remembering them.”
Imagine an herb that not only promotes deep states of sleep that are fertile ground for vivid dreams, but also boosts our ability to remember what happened the morning after. Valerian might be just that.
Warning: Because there isn’t enough information available regarding its effects during pregnancy, women who are expecting are better off avoiding it altogether.
Keep in mind: If you already experience extreme dream states, you might think twice before trying valerian. It can intensify your nocturnal adventures quite a bit – which is wonderful when you’re having a good dream, but not-so-great if you’re having a nightmare.
Preparation: Valerian is most commonly brewed in a tea, but be careful to use water that is hot, but not boiling, in order to preserve the delicate oils in the root. Some also prepare a tincture from the dried or fresh root (this can usually be found at health food stores).
Mugwort – Artemisia vulgaris
Very common throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia, mugwort has a rich history of use, both as a medicinal and metaphysical ally. In the middle ages, it was known asCingulum Sancti Johannis, because Saint John the Baptist famously wore a belt of it whenever he traveled through the woods. It is referenced often in Celtic and Norse mythology as a magical plant that can ward off evil, and was hung in doorways and burnt as incense to clear stagnant air and prevent illness.
Mugwort is known as “Molush” by the Chumash Indians of California, and its Paiute name translates literally to “Dream Plant”. It’s often smoked in indigenous ceremonies, and interestingly, is also hailed by various tribes for its power to ward off evil, bad spirits, and disease.
Known for its dream-enhancing effects, many report that it magnifies the brilliance of color and overall duration of their mid-slumber journeys. On a personal note, I’ve had some lovely experiences with this one
Mugwort grows just about everywhere. You’ll often find it underfoot, whether in the woods or walking through an overgrown urban environment. Is it sheer chance that this sacred herb that reportedly heightens consciousness is sprouting up all around us?
Preparation: Like the two plants mentioned above, Mugwort is quite often taken as a tea, but can also be smoked in a pipe. The leaves of the Mugwort plant are what contain the active chemical constituents.

Dill, scientifically known as Anethum Graveolens, has been used for culinary and medicinal purposes for hundreds of years. Both the seeds and the leaves can be used. Apart from giving a strong, tangy, appetizing flavor and taste, dill has many medicinal properties, which mainly come from certain compounds called Monoterpenes, as well as flavonoids, minerals and certain amino acids.
It is found that mixture of Honey and Cinnamon cures most of the diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Honey has been used as a vital medicine for centuries. Scientists of today also accept honey as a very effective medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases. Take one part honey to two parts of lukewarm water and add a small teaspoon of cinnamon powder, make a paste and massage it on the itching part of the body slowly. It is noticed that the pain recedes within a minute or two. Or arthritis patients may daily, morning and night take one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If drunk regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research done at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week out of the 200 people so treated practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.
Those suffering from hair loss or baldness, may apply a paste of hot olive oil, one tablespoon of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder before bath and keep it for approx. 15 min. and then wash the hair. It was found to be very effective.
Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs of the bladder.
Make a paste of one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and five teaspoons of honey and apply on the aching tooth. This may be done 3 times a day daily till such time that the tooth has stopped aching.
Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, if given to a cholesterol patient, it reduces the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10% within 2 hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken 3 times a day any chronic cholesterol is cured. As per the information received in the said journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complains of cholesterol.
Cold and Cough
Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder daily for 3 days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold and clear the sinuses.
Since ancient times, it is commonly known, that the use of honey strengthens the semen of men. If impotent men regularly take two tablespoon of honey before sleeping, their problem will be solved. People of South America, first thing in the morning gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water. So their breath stays fresh throughout the day.
A native North American wildflower, evening primrose is commonly called “evening star” because its bright yellow flowers open at dusk. It’s a favorite with herb and native plant gardeners and can grow up to 4 feet or 5 feet tall. The seeds are a rich source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid with wide-ranging health benefits.
Native Americans valued evening primrose both as a food and a medicine. They applied a poultice made from the plant to bruises to relieve swelling and made a tea from the root to ease coughs. European settlers took their cue from native peoples, using evening primrose to treat wounds, coughs, sore throats, and digestive upsets. In the 1980s, evening primrose soared in popularity when researchers discovered that its seeds are a gold mine of GLA, a compound rarely found in plants.
Evening primrose oil (EPO) is used to treat a variety of health problems caused by a deficiency in essential fatty acids. These include premenstrual syndrome (PMS), fibrocystic breast pain, eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetic neuropathy. Other conditions that evening primrose may help treat include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, attention deficit disorder, and ulcerative colitis.
GLA is essential for the production of prostaglandins, hormonelike compounds that influence almost every bodily system. Prostaglandins decrease inflammation, stimulate hormone production, and help regulate blood clotting, blood pressure, and PMS-related water retention. If the body is working properly, it converts omega-6 fatty acids (found in vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds) into GLA. But many factors can inhibit this conversion, including advancing age; a diet compromised by excessive saturated fats, trans fats, or alcohol; zinc deficiency; and some medical disorders, such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and cancer. Evening primrose oil supplies a direct source of GLA to the body, bypassing the need for conversion of omega-6s and helping to restore healthy levels of prostaglandins
In colonial America, evening primrose seeds were often substituted for poppy seeds in baking. More compelling is research supporting the use of evening primrose oil for diabetic neuropathy, a common complication of long-term diabetes that causes nerve damage in the legs, feet, arms, and hands. One double-blind study evaluated 111 people with diabetes for one year who were given either 480 mg of GLA daily or a placebo. The researchers found that those given GLA experienced significant improvement in neurological symptoms (Diabetes Care, 1993, vol. 16, no. 9).
GLA also has shown promise as an effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, a painful and disfiguring type of inflammatory arthritis. In a 1996 study, researchers gave 56 patients with active rheumatoid arthritis GLA supplements or a placebo. After six months of treatment, participants taking GLA experienced reduced arthritic symptoms (Arthritis and Rheumatism, 1996, vol. 39, no. 11).
