2017 Eclipse

August 21 2017 is a new Moon and a total solar eclipse. This eclipse occurs when the Moon slides between the Earth and the Sun. Starting over the Pacific ocean, the Moon will paint a 67-mile wide swath of darkness across the United States. This lunar sweep starts at 9:06 am PDT in Oregon, and ends at 4:06 pm EDT in South Carolina. Then the eclipse continues over the Atlantic ocean for about 75 minutes.

To observe, on the West coast the eclipse begins just after 9 am, and the eclipse peak is at 10:19 am. On the East coast, the eclipse begins just after 1 pm, and the peak is around 2:30 pm. If traveling to view the eclipse, allow more time for traffic because Mercury is still retrograde until September 5.

In the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, many of the genes required to form new memories are shut down by a genetic blockade, contributing to the cognitive decline seen in those patients. MIT researchers have now shown that they can reverse that memory loss in mice by interfering with the enzyme that forms the blockade. The enzyme, known as HDAC2, turns genes off by condensing them so tightly that they can’t be expressed. For several years, scientists and pharmaceutical companies have been trying to develop drugs that block this enzyme, but most of these drugs also block other members of the HDAC family, which can lead to toxic side effects. The MIT team has now found a way to precisely target HDAC2, by blocking its interaction with a binding partner called Sp3. “This is exciting because for the first time we have found a specific mechanism by which HDAC2 regulates synaptic gene expression,” says Li-Huei Tsai, director of MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory and the study’s senior author….

On August 12, Mercury will station retrograde in 11° of Virgo and begin its journey backwards to 28° of Leo. With Mercury about to station retrograde, many of us are already feeling a bit of the retro-funk; fuzzy brained, slow motion reality, indecisiveness and a general feeling of discontentment with life. However, because this retrograde happens to take place in between eclipses – a period of time where life typically feels fast paced, urges us to move forward, and make big changes – this retro-funk may display itself a bit differently than usual.

The use of obscene or taboo language – or swearing, as it’s more commonly known – is often seen as a sign that the speaker lacks vocabulary, cannot express themselves in a less offensive way, or even lacks intelligence.

Studies have shown, however, that swearing may in fact display a more, rather than less, intelligent use of language….

I only have one word for this soup.  “Crack”.  Yep, it’s like crack.  Everyone loves it.  I even competed at the Solano County Fair with it and won first place!  Simple to make and best served cold, this soup is a great summertime dish that utilizes fresh, local ingredients.  And, talk about guilt-free eating.  It’s totally vegan.

IMG_2193ROASTED BELL PEPPER AND CORN CHOWDER

2 ½ pounds red bell pepper, seeded, ribbed and cut into slices
1 large red onion, cut into slices
2 large tomatoes, cored and quartered
4 ears of corn, dehusked, whole
6 cloves garlic
1 jalapeno, seeded, ribbed and diced
1 bundle flat leaf parsley
½ cup olive oil
2 teaspoons Kosher salt
1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 teaspoon red pepper flake
16 oz. corn or vegetable stock
