Harvard Unveils MRI Study Proving Meditation Literally Rebuilds The Brain’s Gray Matter In 8 Weeks

Test subjects taking part in an 8-week program of mindfulness meditation showed results that astonished even the most experienced neuroscientists at Harvard University.  The study was led by a Harvard-affiliated team of researchers based at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the team’s MRI scans documented for the very first time in medical history how meditation produced massive changes inside the brain’s gray matter.  “Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have long claimed that meditation also provides cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout the day,” says study senior author Sara Lazar of the MGH Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program and a Harvard Medical School instructor in psychology. “This study demonstrates that changes in brain structure may underlie some of these reported improvements and that people are not just feeling better because they are spending time relaxing.”

Sue McGreevey of MGH writes: “Previous studies from Lazar’s group and others found structural differences between the brains of experienced meditation practitioners and individuals with no history of meditation, observing thickening of the cerebral cortex in areas associated with attention and emotional integration. But those investigations could not document that those differences were actually produced by meditation.”  Until now, that is.  The participants spent an average of 27 minutes per day practicing mindfulness exercises, and this is all it took to stimulate a major increase in gray matter density in the hippocampus, the part of the brain associated with self-awareness, compassion, and introspection.  McGreevey adds: “Participant-reported reductions in stress also were correlated with decreased gray-matter density in the amygdala, which is known to play an important role in anxiety and stress. None of these changes were seen in the control group, indicating that they had not resulted merely from the passage of time.”

“It is fascinating to see the brain’s plasticity and that, by practicing meditation, we can play an active role in changing the brain and can increase our well-being and quality of life,” says Britta Hölzel, first author of the paper and a research fellow at MGH and Giessen University in Germany.

Food ~ Researchers: Tart Cherries Have ‘Highest Anti-Inflammatory Content of any Food’, by Elizabeth Renter

red_reportFruits and vegetables don’t only hold the key to better health overall, they can be used to treat and prevent very specific ailments. For example, using ginger to fight an upset stomach or cranberries to prevent urinary tract infections are two well-known plant-healing remedies. Another notable example is with tart cherries, and how the tiny red fruit can effectively fight inflammation and prevent arthritis.

According to researchers with Oregon Health & Science University, tart cherries have the “highest anti-inflammatory content of any food”. This is a remarkable statement considering all of the fruits and vegetables with anti-inflammatory properties. These anti-inflammatory properties are also likely responsible for the many health benefits of cherries.

The researchers discovered that tart cherries, like Montmorency and Balaton in particular, are rich in phenolics and anthocyanins, more so than sweet cherry varieties like Bing, Lambert, and Rainier. These compounds are known to reduce inflammation considerably, which is why cherries are quickly rising as one of the best home remedies for gout and other inflammatory-related issues.

In this particular study, the researchers analyzed 20 women between the ages of 40 and 70 with inflammatory osteoarthritis. The women drank tart cherry juice twice daily for three weeks. At the end of the three week period, the researchers found “significant reductions” in inflammation markers. The reductions were most pronounced in women who had the highest inflammation levels at the start of the period.

A study from 2001 indicated the anthocyanins in tart cherries were as effective as ibuprofen and naproxen (over-the-counter inflammation and pain medications) at suppressing enzymes associated with arthritis. Best of all, there are no side effects.

Another previous study—this one from Baylor Research Institute—found that a single daily dose of tart cherry extract helped reduce pain associated with osteoarthritis but more than 20 percent.
Natural pain relieving and anti-inflammatory foods should be staples in the diets of people who have to deal with conditions like arthritis. The alternatives—like ibuprofen, naproxen, and acetaminophen—can be quite dangerous.

For example, research spanning from 1995 to 2006 found a connection between hearing loss and ibuprofen use. But hearing loss isn’t the only risk. Over-the-counter pain medications have also been tied to birth defects, blindness, strokes, and intestinal bleeding.
Natural alternatives include tart cherries, curcumin (found in turmeric), and willow bark – all effective options without the side effects.

Health ~ Brazilian Wasp Venom Found To Kill Cancer Cells Without Harming Healthy Cells

According to recent studies conducted by Professor Mario Palma at Sao Paulo State University Brazilian wasp venom has the ability to kill cancer cells while not causing any harm to healthy cells. His research fond that the specific wasp that has the correct venom for this task is the Polybia paulista. The toxin produced by this wasp is called MP1 (Polybia-MP1) is what has been known to single out and destroy cancer cells.

“Cancer therapies that attack the lipid composition of the cell membrane would be an entirely new class of anticancer drugs. This could be useful in developing new combination therapies, where multiple drugs are used simultaneously to treat a cancer by attacking different parts of the cancer cells at the same time,” Paul Beales, co-author of the study said.

Another researcher on the team, João Ruggiero Neto from São Paulo State University further explained the process, saying that “Formed in only seconds, these large pores are big enough to allow critical molecules such as RNA and proteins to easily escape cells. The dramatic enhancement of the permeabilization induced by the peptide in the presence of PE and the dimensions of the pores in these membranes was surprising.”

Shamanism ~ Curiosity is the Key to Finding What You Seek

Orbis
We’ve all heard the biblical phrase, “Seek and ye shall find.” It always sounds very positive and rewarding. But how many of us are so frustrated with seeking and not finding that we’d like to have a serious chat with the author of that phrase (St. Matthew)?

If you’ve been seeking for a long time but haven’t found what you’re looking for, don’t fret!

If you haven’t found what you’re looking for, it may not be because you’re not looking long or hard enough. It may because the quality or tone of the attention you give to the seeking process isn’t quite right for finding what you want.

The tone or quality of your attention can actually be the difference between finding what you want and being in total frustration. It turns out that the best tone for finding what you want is curiosity. If you can maintain the innocent curiosity of a child when seeking anything in life, you will find and get everything you want.

Why is this? Because there is an inverse relationship between attachment to what we want and getting what we want. The more we are desperately attached to what we want (i.e., “I just gotta have it!”), the less we are likely to get it. But, if we can become very curious about what we want without attachment, then we will attract it into our lives.

For instance, let’s say you want to bring a certain amount of income into your business. The first thing to do is to tell the Universe in a very clear and precise way. Write down exactly what you want and what you don’t want (and by when). Then, adopt a posture of curiosity. It might sound something like, “Hmmm, I wonder how the Universe will bring this about…” As you encounter different people or events in your life, you might ask yourself, “I wonder if this is going to an avenue for what I want?” or “Isn’t this interesting?”

The channeled teacher Abraham tells us that “genius is nothing more than continued attention on the same thing.” In other words, the longer you direct your attention positively toward something, the more you’re a genius in that area. The same thing is true about curiosity. The longer you can maintain a childlike curiosity about what you want, the faster that which you want will come into your life.

So the phrase “Seek and ye shall find” is most definitely true, but only if you learn to seek as a child would seek-with wonder, delight, and joy in the process. Anytime you find yourself getting obsessed or frustrated with the process, just go back to that lighthearted curiosity. The Universe will always bring you what you want, and that child like curiosity will keep the doors of your life open to receive it.

The Great View

All is the Lord. There is nothing else in existence.
Ignorance of this is the only impurity.
When you find yourself, you find God; When you find God, you find yourself.
Wherever true realization of God is, there nothing and no one is excluded.
God is both one and infinite; both the unlimited and the limited.
When you come to know God, the Supreme Self, you embody devotion; when you embody devotion, you come to know God.
The Father is in the Mother; Shiva is in Shakti. The whole of life is the means to realizing the Self…

The Importance of Swapping Screen Time For Sunshine

In “How to Raise a Wild Child,” Dr. Scott D. Sampson asserts that topophilia, a love of place, is the key to restoring sustainability on our planet. As chief curator at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and host of the PBS KIDS television series Dinosaur Train, he argues that the current disconnect between kids and the natural world is a threat to their physical, mental, and emotional health. Sampson offers the topophilia hypothesis: that bonding between people and place offers adaptive advantages to human beings. He believes topophilia can become the foundation for the young generation to regain their connection to nature.

Be The Change …

Have dinner around the table tonight; learn to create ‘circle moments’ within each day.

For centuries, our ancestors have gathered around the proverbial fire, so to speak–holding space for unity and peace. In many ways, these ‘circles’ have helped to foster dialogue, to grow community, and engage in a shared path of understanding.

The circle became a way to move to a kind of world that I want to live in.

Take a moment to experience the awe that nature inspires — perhaps, look for the stars in the night sky, watch the sky turn orange, purple, and pink at sunset during your evening commute — and reflect on how doing so impacts your relationship with others in your life.

What do the Grand Canyon, Sistine Chapel, and gazing at distant stars all have in common? They can awaken a deep appreciation for the world around us and inspire a profound sense of awe. This sensation is often accompanied by an awareness of something larger than ourselves — that we play a small part in an intricate cosmic dance that is life.

THE ERA OF INFORMATIONAL IMPATIENCE

I frequently lament a particularly prevalent pathology of our time – our extreme impatience with the dynamic process of attaining knowledge and transmuting it into wisdom. We want to have the knowledge, as if it were a static object, but we don’t want to do the work of claiming it – and so we reach for simulacra that compress complex ideas into listicles and two-minute animated explainers.

Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (August 27, 1770–November 14, 1831) wrote on the elements of this pathology in his masterwork, “The Phenomenology of Mind”:
“The goal to be reached is the mind’s insight into what knowing is. Impatience asks for the impossible, wants to reach the goal without the means of getting there. The length of the journey has to be borne with, for every moment is necessary; and again we must halt at every stage, for each is itself a complete individual form, and is fully and finally considered only so far as its determinate character is taken and dealt with as a rounded and concrete whole, or only so far as the whole is looked at in the light of the special and peculiar character which this determination gives it. Because the substance of individual mind, nay, more, because the universal mind at work in the world (Weltgeist), has had the patience to go through these forms in the long stretch of time’s extent, and to take upon itself the prodigious labour of the world’s history, where it bodied forth in each form the entire content of itself, as each is capable of presenting it; and because by nothing less could that all-pervading mind ever manage to become conscious of what itself is – for that reason, the individual mind … cannot expect by less toil to grasp what its own substance contains.”
Our mistaken conception of knowledge as a static object is also the root of our perilous self-righteousness and the tyranny of opinions. When you come right down to it, opinions are the most superficial things about anyone. Thus, Knowledge isn’t a matter of owning a truth by making it familiar and then asserting its ideal presentation, but quite the opposite – an eternal tango with the unfamiliar. So, true understanding requires that we demolish the familiar, overcome what psychologists have since termed the “backfire effect,” and cease clinging to the fixed points of our opinions.

Perceptions …

Truth is matter. Our goal is to cloth this matter with Faith (Form). We should never ignore our truth but empower our truth to continue searching for a higher truth that is not disconnected from our experiences. To go above our experiences is not to ignore but rather to use them as a tool to reveal our inner connection, our inner power. If the system wanted us to be happy on a low level of desire, it could of done that long ago. But that is not the goal of the Creator. The goal of the Creator is for us to reach adhesion with its degree of power. All the situations we experience are not for filling but rather to enable us to grow, to become independent with each other. It’s very important for us to not be fanatic but learn and understand the growth process together.

Hawaii Flips Switch on World’s Largest Ocean Harvesting Clean Energy Plant

Hawaii is definitely ahead of the curve when it comes to renewable energy. In June, the Aloha state became the first state to mandate that all of its electricity come from renewable sources no later than 2045. Along with other islands, its charging ahead with wind, solar and smart grid systems. But now, the state is home to the first fully closed-cycle Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant in the U.S.

The thermal energy plant in Hawaii is the world's largest.
The ocean thermal energy plant in Hawaii is the first in the U.S. and the largest such plant in the world.
OTEC is “a process that can produce electricity by using the temperature difference between deep cold ocean water and warm tropical surface waters,” Makai Ocean Engineering, the company that built the plant, explains on its website. “OTEC plants pump large quantities of deep cold seawater and surface seawater to run a power cycle and produce electricity.” Makai touts OTEC as a constant, clean energy source that is “capable of providing massive levels of energy.”

Watch this short video for an explanation of how it works:

Makai staff explain in the video that the potential for OTEC is immense because the source of the energy is just sunlight.

“About 70 percent of the sunlight coming to Earth lands on the ocean. Most of that is captured in the surface layers of the ocean water in the form of heat,” says Duke Hartman, vice president of business development at Makai. “That’s beautiful because we can extract that energy 24/7 and use that power any time we want it, totally eliminating the need for an energy storage system.”

The 105-kilowatt demonstration plant on the Big Island, which cost about $5 million to build, only generates enough electricity to power 120 homes. But to date, it’s the largest such plant in the world. And it’s promising enough for the U.S. Navy to be investing in it. The Navy has a target for 50 percent of its shore-based energy to come from alternative sources in five years.

While the industry is still very much in its infancy, Makai believes it won’t be long until it takes off.

“The plant is dispatchable, meaning the power can be ramped up and down quickly to accommodate fluctuating demand and intermittent power surges from solar and wind farms,” Hartman told Bloomberg.

The company estimates that all of Hawaii’s electricity needs could be met by about 12 commercial-scale OTEC plants. They already have plans to construct a 1-megawatt facility in Japan, and Hartman says Brazil, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and West African nations all have potential.

“Anywhere tropical with deep water is ideal, especially if they import their fuel,” says Hartman.

The biggest challenge remains financing, explains Hartman. “We need a visionary investor to get us past the expensive pilot project into the large-scale commercial projects,” he said.

According to the company’s website, an offshore commercial-scale OTEC plant could prevent burning roughly 1.3 million barrels of oil each year, produce electricity at roughly $0.20 per kilowatt-hour and prevent more than half a million tons of carbon emissions per year.
