The Cake of Three (Dolce del Tre) Recipe on Food52

The recipe for this Tuscan cake is based on a ratio of weight (cups and ounces are given too, though you can see it’s a lot easier to remember in grams!). It’s an old-fashioned recipe that I found in a cookbook by Claudia Spargi on the cuisine of Tuscany’s Maremma region. It makes a cake that is springy, moist and delicately flavored—the kind of cake Italians would call a “breakfast cake” and the perfect blank canvas, too, for those who want to play around with adding more to it. Traditional Italian favorites might be lemon or orange zest, vanilla extract, a splash of rum or sambuca, or chopped nuts, chocolate, or dried fruit. A layer of sliced apples or pears over the top would be delicious, too. The options are pretty much endless. It keeps very well, wrapped well in plastic wrap. Leave as is or dust with confectioners’ sugar.

Incredible Shiva Lingas Carvings Emerge from the Shalmala River as Dry Weather Lowers the Water | Ancient Origins

It was said that Shiva’s lingam (phallus) was so impressive that even two other all-powerful gods, Braham and Vishnu, could not find its end. Thousands of rock carvings representing Shiva’s lingam, as well as female sexual symbols, have emerged from a river in Karnataka State because of low water levels. People gather there to worship Shiva in his form as the lingam.

Dry weather has caused a drop in the level of the Shalmala River in Karnataka State, India, revealing thousands of carvings in the rock bed of male and female sexual symbols – linga and yoni – and

In August 2005, a tiny mummified body was found in the ancient Persian village of Makhunik in what is now Iran. The discovery caused an international sensation when researchers reported that the remains belonged to an adolescent dwarf and that excavations of the ancient town revealed architecture that suggested it was a city of little people. Here we explore whether an ancient city of dwarfs really existed, or whether it is all just media sensation.

Did You Know …

Green Turtles

Only 1 out of 1,000 hatchling sea turtles survive to adulthood, and they can live to be over 100 yrs old. green turtles are listed as endangered, and their numbers are decreasing.  They are hunted and their eggs are collected by humans, a legal practice in some countries.  Green turtles are also threatened by destruction of nesting areas and foraging areas in the sea.  Sometimes, they are accidentally caught in fishing nets, further declining their population.  Many countries are trying to protect the nesting and foraging grounds, and they are protected under many treaties and laws.

Vanilla Blueberry Tart | One Green Planet

Holy walnuts, this is delicious. The filling is basically just an awesome blueberry-banana smoothie and the crust is walnuts and dates. You’re gonna love my nuts (or be disturbed by my grotesque and obscure sense of humour). In any case, you actually will love this recipe, which includes nuts. Owned by me. Making them my nuts. So you will love my nuts. HAH.

The Story of the Chinese Farmer | KarmaTube

In “The Story of the Chinese Farmer,” philosopher Alan Watts looks at the idea of what we consider good or bad fortune with the parable of a Chinese farmer, who refuses to see anything as positive or negative. This beautifully animated video will make you question whether one can truly know if something is good or bad when you can never know the consequences.

“To See a World …” (Fragments from “Auguries of Innocence”) ~ by William Blake

william-blake
William Blake (1757-1827)
To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

A Robin Redbreast in a Cage
Puts all Heaven in a Rage.
A dove house fill’d with doves and pigeons
Shudders Hell thro’ all its regions.
A Dog starv’d at his Master’s Gate
Predicts the ruin of the State.

A Horse misus’d upon the Road
Calls to Heaven for Human blood.
Each outcry of the hunted Hare
A fiber from the Brain does tear.

He who shall train the Horse to War
Shall never pass the Polar Bar.
The Beggar’s Dog and Widow’s Cat,
Feed them and thou wilt grow fat.
The Gnat that sings his Summer song
Poison gets from Slander’s tongue.
The poison of the Snake and Newt
Is the sweat of Envy’s Foot.

A truth that’s told with bad intent
Beats all the Lies you can invent.
It is right it should be so;
Man was made for Joy and Woe;
And when this we rightly know
Thro’ the World we safely go.

Every Night and every Morn
Some to Misery are Born.
Every Morn and every Night
Some are Born to sweet delight.
Some are Born to sweet delight,
Some are Born to Endless Night.
