Just For Today

India_-_Sights_&_Culture_-_Camaraderie_(4038869395)How many of us truly love our jobs? With longer work hours, and less opportunity for creativity and personal advancement – it’s no wonder so many of us dread that Monday morning return to work. But, what alternatives do we have? It turns out – there are plenty.

What steps might you take to improve your workspace? We can restructure our work environments to increase innovation, efficiency, and create a space for joy in our work world to eliminate the office gossip and lack of convivial friendship. Gossip often suggests that someone is feeling powerless in a situation or needs help and encouragement to succeed. Perhaps employers could consider paying for activities that bring workers together in a shared activity, such as attending a yoga class or working together on a community project, or create break rooms or other communal spaces so that friendship and camaraderie happen naturally. The old factory model of workplace efficiency—where each worker cog in the system is expected to do what he’s told to do without an understanding of how he’s contributing or the power to control his efforts—is outdated in our information economy. Instead, employers need to find the ways that they can encourage their most important asset—their employees—and strategically foster greater workplace innovation, productivity, and harmony. When we provide employees; with the flexibility to succeed in both their personal and professional lives, we achieve more than an extraordinary workplace, we create an organization that performs at its very best.

If you are an employer, or a disgruntled employee, figure it out and implement one of these ideas today.

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” ~ Confucius

SEEING WITHIN

redwood-forest-californiaMan sees a tree and the tree says, “I am here, I was here, and I am nothing more but a thing that is here.”

Man ponders and answers, “No! I give you a name! You are ‘tree’! You have beauty and you have a soul. You point upwards and you say, ‘There is something higher, there is the One who gives me life and gives me my very being.’”

And so Man goes on, until he has brought the whole of creation down on its knees.

Man alone can accomplish what the angels cannot. Man alone can discover the spiritual within the material.

Real Cheese vs. Frankencheese

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you may notice that Amelia and I always grate our own cheese.  Pre-shredded cheese just seems to taste funny and doesn’t melt as well as we’d like especially in soups and dips.  But why?

If you look closely at a package of pre-shredded cheese, you may notice the obvious – it’s not just cheese.  Cheese makers use additional items like potato starch, powdered cellulose, calcium sulfate and natamycin to prevent the cheese from sticking together and molding.  Powdered cellulose is made primarily out of wood or cotton fibers.  Calcium sulfate is a white rock commonly found in things like plaster of paris or drywall, and is ground into powder and used to keep things dry.  Natamycin is an anti-fungal agent which is also given in much larger, clinical doses to treat fungal infections such as Candida and Aspergillus.  So, while…

From The Writings of Paramahansa Yogananda

“As the parlor awakens social consciousness, the library fosters reading consciousness, and the bedroom suggest sleeping, so everyone should have a room or screened off corner, or a well ventilated closet, used exclusively for the purpose of silent meditation. Traditional homes in India always have such a shrine for daily worship.

“A sanctuary in one’s home is very effective in fostering spirituality, because unlike a place of public worship it becomes personalized, and also because it is accessible for spontaneous devotional expressions throughout the day. The children in India are not forced to frequent the shrine, but are inspired to do so by the parents’ example.

“In these home temples, families learn to find the soul peace hidden behind the veil of silence. Here they introspect, and in prayer and meditation recharge themselves with the inner power of the soul, and in divine communion attune themselves to discriminative wisdom by which they may govern their lives according to the dictates of conscience and right judgment.

“Interiorized prayer brings forth the realization that peace and service to divine ideals are the goal of life, without which no amount of material acquisition can assure happiness.”

There is compassion that feeds the ego
and there is compassion that humbles it.

Compassion that feeds the ego
is a sense of pity for those who stand beneath you.

Compassion that humbles
is born of a deeper understanding of the order of things:

When you understand that your fellow man is suffering
in order that you may be privileged to help him
—then you are truly humbled.

Health ~ Fake Olive Oil is Literally Everywhere! How To Know Whether It Is Fake Or Original Olive Oil?

fake-olive-oil-is-literally-everywhere-how-to-know-whether-it-is-fake-or-original-olive-oil-600x320Olive oil is an essential part of Mediterranean diet, and Hippocrates, the father of medicine, has used it thousand years ago. Consume monosaturated fatty acids to strengthen your heart.

Researchers have revealed that Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes when compared to other low-fat diet regimens.

Olive oil is essential for strong bones, wellness, healthy weight loss and proper brain function. It aids in the treatment of Irregular bowel movement and oxidative anxiety.

Why should you consume olive oil?

It is rich in monosaturated fatty acids which do not burden your body with fat. It is packed with phenolics, an acidic constituent which provides its acidic and bitter taste.

Olive oil has zero carbohydrates, zero protein and traces of hydrogenated fat. It is rich in vitamins E and K, which make it amazing for your skin. Phenolic acids protect heart.

How much do you know about extra virgin oil?

“Virgin olive oil” does not refer to the quality, and the term does not mean it is added pure. The difference is in the process of production. Experts recognize 4 types of virgin olive oil. Low quality olive oil is used in the production of soap and it is not edible.

High quality virgin oil is cold-pressed, and it has the best taste and fragrance. It is not exposed to temperatures higher than 86°F.

People go crazy for extra virgin olive oil, which is why stores are flooded with fake oil. The University of California tested many brands of extra virgin olive oil sold in the US. The results showed that 69% of the oil sold in the US markets is fake!

Pay more attention to products marked as “extra virgin olive oil!”

How can you know which oil is fake? Fake and original olive oil sure taste different, but you cannot just open all the bottles and find the real one.

What does “fake olive oil” actually mean? How prevalent is its circulation?

Fake olive oil is usually a combination of two oils – sunflower oil and a portion of pure olive oil. It can be also a mixture of different olive oils. It may be non-Italian, usually a combination of soybean and sunflower oil.

Producers often add chlorophyll and beta-carotene. Pay special attention to tags like “extra pure” and “extra virgin.”

Fake olive oil is commonly sold, and unfortunately many famous producers claim to offer
“the healthest olive oil,” which is actually fake. Researchers have revealed that renowned brands like Bertolli, Filippo Berio, Mazzola, Mezzetta, Newman’s own, Star, Safe way, Colavita, and Whole meals sell fake olive oil.

How to recognize fake olive oil?

This is the most important question. We give you some simple tips, and comprise your thoughts on your own regarding the second tip.

Cooling extra virgin olive oil is an easy way to bust fake olive oil. Thickening implies that your oil has more monosaturated fat in it, but this does not eliminate the possibility of containing safflower or canola oil. However, if it does not thicken, it is not even close to extra virgin olive oil.

Extra virgin olive oil keeps oil lamps flammable. Again, this is not a precise method. If it does not light the lamp, it is most certainly not extra virgin olive oil.

Taste, refridgerating method or lamp tests are not extremely precise. Always buy olive oil from your neighborhood farmers. Italian olive oil is considered standard when compared to oils from other countries.

Here are the brands that fell short to fulfill the standards for extra virgin olive oil

  • Pompeian
  • Whole Foods
  • Bertolli
  • Colavita
  • Carapelli
  • Star

Eat Local Grown listed the following brands:

  • Fillippo
  • Berio
  • Mazzola
  • Mezzetta
  • Newman’s Own
  • Safeway
  • Whole Foods

This information is from a 2010 research study which involved many popular brands.

Lucini, Lucero (Ascolano), California Olive Ranch, Kirkland Organic, McEvoy Ranch Organic, and Cobram Estate were additionally noted by Eat Local Grown.

Look for certification

Finding a 3rd party qualification is the best assurance that you are buying high quality olive oil. Both California Olive Oil Council and Australian Olive Association have stringent accreditation programs which make their seals trustworthy.

If you are looking for an Italian olive oil, search for Protect Designation of Origin (PDO) or Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) seals.

Be extremely careful when buying olive oil, especially the extra virgin brands.

Health ~ DIY Coconut Oil Toothpaste (no flouride!)

how-to-make-homemade-coconut-oil-toothpaste-600x400

Everyone already knows that most commercial toothpastes contain many toxic ingredients:  sodium fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate, triclosan, artificial colors and flavorings, propylene glycol and so on.

Of course, in health food stores and there are good natural toothpastes (especially ayurveda), but having read the ingredients, we realize that we can do something similar at home ourselves – and a lot cheaper.

Homemade pastes are simple and fun to prepare, and a lot safer and healthier for our precious teeth. Baking soda is not too abrasive for the teeth, indeed – this domestic toothpaste is less abrasive than the purchase.

Tips: Use a soft brush with which will help you massage. We call your attention that domestic paste does not foam, because they have no harmful sodium lauryl sulfate.

This recipe differs from other recipes that you can find on the internet because it is not salty but very tasty and kids love it.

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin coconut oil
  • 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of stevia extract (approximately 50 mg) to sweet taste (or ½ teaspoon dried minced leaves of Stevia)
  • 15-20 drops of essential oil of peppermint (and/or cinnamon, orange, …)

Procedure:

Melt or soften a little coconut oil. If the oil is in solid condition use a fork, and if it’s liquid, use a spoon.

Stir the other ingredients and mix well. If you’re using completely melted coconut oil, you will need to stir a few times so that the mixture cools, and soda is finely deployed and connected.

Place the mixture in the tube (available in pharmacies empty vial to which subsequently put the cap with a narrow opening for extrusion or in a small jar (you can make a variety of bottles for each family member).

Allow the paste to cool and compress.

Using and Storing:

Squeeze out of tubes or dip your toothbrush in a jar and apply a small amount of paste. You can also use a small spoon to put the toothpaste on the brush out of the jar. Keep the jar or the tube away from heat and light because of essential oils.

Effects:

People using the paste claim the following:

  • They got less plaque on the teeth
  • This toothpaste removes the odor of onions and garlic much better than the purchased one
  • They got smoother and more polished teeth
  • Don’t have tooth decay for many years

Try it out!

Theosophy ~ Dhyana Marga – 1

LOGO-TTS

Ere thou canst settle in Dhyana-Marga and call at thine, thy Soul has to become as the ripe mango fruit: as soft and sweet as its bright golden pulp for others” woes. as hard as that fruit’s stone for thine own throes and sorrows, O Conqueror of Weal and Woe.
Make hard thy Soul against the snares of Self; deserve for it the name of “Diamond-Soul”.
For, as the diamond buried deep within the throbbing heart of earth can never mirror back the earthly lights, so are thy mind and Soul; plunged in Dhyana-Marga, these must mirror nought of Maya’s realm illusive.

The Voice of the Silence

Every authentic system of spiritual discipline indicates different stages upon the path of progressive mastery over the mind. The path of progressive awakening to supreme unconditional universal Truth is an arduous course of intensified practice leading to serene contemplation.Dhyana Marga – the Path of Meditation – is an inward fusion of mentality and morality that releases the mystical energies of enlightenment. Transcending ratiocinative analysis and ethical endeavour, though yielding to the full fruition of both, dhyana is the mysterious catalyst spoken of by Jesus which “leavens the whole”. It is the living presence of the Dhyani energies vital to any lasting nucleus of universal brotherhood formed by sincere aspirants and neophytes on the Path. Like the fabulous wish-fulfilling gem or the pearl of great price, dhyana is one of the priceless treasures of the Path which must, at a certain stage of development, be earned by the disciple before there can be any further advance. If this is true of the cyclic process of individual growth, it is even more true of the evolutionary stream of humanity.

From the beginning of the New Cycle emphasis has been laid upon reaching beyond discursive reasoning and analytic study. Though skilful analysis can be helpful, it is no more efficacious than one wing of a bird in flight. The other wing is ethical practice, purification of motive and steadfastness in reference to one’s deepest integrity and fidelity of commitment. The balance between these two aspects of development has been stressed from the start, but as in the life of a bird a definite stage comes at which further development of the wings is neither possible nor desirable, so too in the growth of a committed group of sincere individuals, many of whom have bound themselves by commitments to the spirit of the Pledge of Kwan-Yin. Touched by the potent vibration of the Cycle, a strong nucleus of seekers has persisted, despite ups and downs, in creating a distinct current of direction in their lives. In ways known and unknown to themselves, they have resonated to the current Seventh Cycle of the Theosophical Movement, the last of the series initiated by Tsong-Kha-Pa in the fifteenth century in Tibet. It is deeply fitting that all aspirants upon the path of The Voice of the Silenceshould now seek to become more firm and steadfast with regard todhyana – meditation.

True meditation begins with intense concentration or dharana – bringing the mind to a clear focus, which then gives way to the uninterrupted contemplation that is the beginning of dhyana. In its full unfoldment it can lead to true wisdom – prajna – complete absorption in one’s higher consciousness with universal self-consciousness, a state of being marked by the attunement of Atma-Buddhi-Manas to the Cosmic Triad. The actual level of attainment reached by anyone attempting this meditation and the pace of his or her development are relatively unimportant. Whatever doubts, anxieties or ambitions some may bring to such attempts are largely irrelevant. What is significant is that a definite and increasing number of human beings should make an attempt, at whatever pace, to learn the practice of true meditation. The simple fact that a number of human beings recognize this common undertaking and obligation, sensing the common joy in the quest for gaining greater proficiency in dhyana, is propitious and encouraging to the alchemical work of the Theosophical Movement. It is a positive contribution to the profound impact of the New Cycle, to the elevation of human consciousness in the world as a whole, and to the careful preparation of the ground for the Mystery Temples of the future.

The apprentice on the path of Dhyana Marga must learn that the senses are liars; it is precisely at that moment when one seems outwardly to be most alone and engaged in the difficult task of acquiring mental concentration that one is in fact most directly related to humanity. Once one sees this clearly, it becomes possible to insert one’s honest and humble efforts in the practice of dhyana into a larger effort by a number of people. If they bind themselves together by invisible threads spun through firmness and contemplation and by a continuous current of meditation, they can leaven up the world, in the metaphor of Jesus. This has nothing to do with any individualistic accomplishment. Rather, through their meditation, they can create a magnetic field into which can be focussed the wisdom of Avalokiteshvara, the wisdom of the collective Hosts of Dhyani Buddhas, Mahatmas and Bodhisattvas. Metaphysically, it is the totality of actual and invisible wisdom behind the whole of this system of worlds, which is itself a partial emanation of the primal Adi-Buddha. The aggregate sum-total of actual and potential wisdom forming the radiant core of the system of worlds is nothing but a spark of that absolute and infinite ocean of purely transcendental Wisdom from which arises the possibility of all worlds and all periods of manifestation

Wisdom is neither created nor destroyed, neither increased nor decreased, but is universal, inexhaustible and vast. It is already self-existent on a primordial plane and is in fact the very ground of the possibility of existence. It may be represented in thought and in collective manifestation as a Host of beings called the Army of the Voice. This is merely a metaphor to intimate something of the virtually inconceivable grandeur and precision of the array of divine elements and beings that constitute the living cosmos. It is possible to focus that light of universal wisdom, continual contemplation and eternal ideation within a matrix created by the love, unity and joint heroic efforts of a nucleus of human beings formed over a period of time. Thus, it is possible to bring down onto the plane of mundane human existence glimpses and rays, sparks and flashes, of that divine light of wisdom that is all-potent on its own plane but is otherwise latent and unavailable. Collectively, a group of human beings can become like a great lens for the drawing down of the light of unmanifest wisdom into our globe to meet the cries of pain, the hungers and the longings of myriads of minds and hearts.

To begin to become an apprentice of eternal wisdom in time, one must gain some minimal understanding of cycles. There can be no practice of concentration and meditation, dharana and dhyana, unless one can rise above the sequence of alternating states of consciousness involved in the breath, the pulse, sleeping and waking, the passage of seasons, septenates of years, life and death and rebirth. Whilst it would be a false and self-imposed burden to expect to comprehend complex evolutionary cycles, one may, nonetheless, bring a minimal sense of the marriage of continuity and detachment to one’s understanding of the collective human pilgrimage. The New Cycle of the Theosophical Movement, its Seventh Impulsion, marks its anniversary on November 17, a date that is significant not only in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries of the Christian era, but in relation to human consciousness on this earth in general. According to Clement of Alexandria, it was the true birthday of Jesus. Historically, it was the birthday of Pico della Mirandola, the light of the Renaissance. It is also the anniversary of many extraordinary events in history, both recorded and unrecorded. It is one of a series of occult points in the year that may be thought of as birthdays of theDhyanis, points of intersection in cyclic time of aspects of Avalokiteshvarawith manifested humanity. Thus, whilst the Seventh Impulsion of the Theosophical Movement is directly linked to this particular aspect of the manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, it cannot be separated from the other manifestations of the Logos present at other cyclic intervals.

Just For Today

aloha_palmtrees

Today, when you realize your mind has wandered far away from where it was supposed to be, don’t be hard on yourself. Instead, use it as an opportunity to become more aware of your own mental experience, and gently return your focus to your breath.

We’ve all been there. You’re slouched in a meeting or a classroom, supposedly paying attention, but your mind has long since wandered off, churning out lists of all the things you need to do — or that you could be doing if only you weren’t stuck here…Suddenly you realize everyone is looking your way expectantly, waiting for an answer. But you’re staring blankly, grasping at straws to make a semi-coherent response. The curse of the wandering mind!  We need to bring purpose and focus back into the equation.

Life is only available in the present moment.

Chole is very popular dish from the Northern part of India. Chickpeas simmered in with some spices for hours bring out the flavors so well balanced and makes a tasty treat which could be enjoyed Indian Bread like naan, parantha or Puri (bhatura) or simply with a whole wheat bread. The way I learned making bhaturas is very unique with potaotes and yougurt they come out very soft and not so chewy.

Saute it for some seconds. Once the onions turn translucent add the chopped tomatoes. Saute it till the tomatoes become soft. Sprinkle the cumin-coriander powder, red chili powder, salt to taste. Let it simmer for sometime. Add the chole masala powder , pomegranate seeds and tamarind chutney or pulp. Add 11/2 cup of water. Add the boiled potatoes either cubes or mashed to thicken the gravy.Simmer it for about 5 to 10 minutes. Garnish it with fresh chopped coriander leaves and ginger julienne.

FDA Pushing To Regulate Homeopathy Out Of Existence??

Why is there a sudden push by the FDA to label homeopathic remedies as dangerous? Why is there a need to regulate substances that have been used for hundreds of years with out any issues? What does the FDA have to gain?

The FDA has published two documents recently, which suggest that WAR is being declared on the profession of homeopathic medicine – or at least on the manufacture of homeopathic remedies, which comes to the same thing in the end. What is a homeopath without homeopathic remedies?

On March 19, 2015 the FDA published an advisory (called a “safety alert”) about homeopathic asthma OTC medications, recommending that patients be wary, and that health care practitioners be sure to report any adverse effects to the FDA. Here is the link to that safety alert:   http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm439014.htm

The FDA has since that date scheduled public hearings on

“the current use of human drug and biological products labeled as homeopathic, as well as the Agency’s regulatory framework for such products. These products include prescription drugs and biological products labeled as homeopathic and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs labeled as homeopathic.”

Here is the link to the document which was published on March 27, 2015 – not even 10 days after the March 19th safety alert. https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2015/03/27/2015-07018/homeopathic-product-regulation-evaluating-the-food-and-drug-administrations-regulatory-framework

The date of the hearings is set for April 20 and 21, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. That is three weeks from first publication of the announcement.

Seeds for Meditation

spiral_splash

This is a special moment in the time-wave continuum: that mysterious, potent space between lightning and thunder, between inhalation and exhalation. Your positive influence interpersonally and with your tribe, community, and associates, could not be more well placed than it is now. Charisma is now your companion and ally.

This is the time in your earthly cycle when you are set to receive abundance, and it is mandated for you to receive in great measure. Your previous struggles and sorrows have paved the way for this time of abundance in the time-wave continuum. For the completion of this cycle be fully awake, disassociate from any negativity no matter how large or how small and find stillness on a regular schedule. Stillness is as important to the being as water is to the body as you make the grand shift into the self that you will remember as your authentic self, the self that has been denied.

The great abounding that lies before you happens when after isolation in the darkness and confinement of the counting house, you emerge to give of your light, love, and spirit. This activates your inner knowledge and opens the portals to growth and contentment, which will make way for peace and of love, light and the strength to handle it. It is big and in that bigness you must be in the clarity of self to receive. At this point do not skip your practice in anyway. When you find yourself saying I don’t have time for this, it is then you must step forward and ready yourself for the grace of the God form which is what will be your sustenance during this new and glorious cycle.

Move forward on your own to accomplish and complete your most precious tasks and you will be positioned to receive the support, goods, and profits you have desired and toiled for. This is the time, the moment of receiving abundance, when you shine like the sun at midday, spreading your light and sharing the blessings that are coming your way.

Na Mana’o ~ Vulnerability Prayer

les-miserables-anne-hathaway-600-600x450

“Give me the courage to show up and let myself be seen.”

Now, ask yourself:  What is worth doing even if I fail?!

Vulnerability is life’s great dare. It’s life asking, “Are you all in? Can you value your own vulnerability as much as you value it in others?”

Answering yes to these questions is not weakness: It’s courage beyond measure. It’s daring greatly. And often the result of daring greatly isn’t a victory march as much as it is a quiet sense of freedom mixed with a little battle fatigue.
