Societal Influences:  Here’s What Just a Few Days Without Electronic Devices Did For Children Reading Human Emotion

Researchers suggest children’s social skills are declining as they have less time for face-to-face interaction due to their increased use of digital media, according to a UCLA psychology study. Scientists found that sixth-graders who went five days without even glancing at a smartphone, television or other digital screen did substantially better at reading human emotions than sixth-graders from the same school who continued to spend hours each day looking at their electronic devices.

Pāli Word a Day for March 29, 2017 — mattaññū — one of moderation

Santaṃ tassa manaṃ hoti, santā vācā,

vimuttassa, upasantassa tādino.

Calm is one’s thought, calm one’s speech,
and calm one’s deed, who, truly knowing,

Tarot Contemplation – The Emperor (reversed)

For today, make a to-do list and get to it.  No excuses.  No distractions.  You can get a lot of meaningful work done today, but only if you take responsibility for yourself.  The Emperor is a card of authority, structure and security.  When he appears reversed, there is probably some problem in one of these areas.  The card could represent someone who is abusing their power.  It may be that the person in charge of your situation, whether it is you or someone else, has let their power go to their head.  They may be overly controlling or critical.  They may put their own needs before the greater good.  They may be deceitful or greedy.  They may be lazy or unmotivated, or just not qualified for the position they hold.  The Emperor can also appear reversed when a situation is not safe or predictable.  Rules and structure are missing.  Chaos prevails.  If you are trying to get something done, but do not have a plan or structure, you may find you make no progress.  Alternatively, if you are too structured and rigid, the Emperor Reversed may be prompting you to shake up your routine and be a little less predictable for the sake of creativity.  This card can also indicate trouble with boundaries.  You may find it difficult to say “no” or to avoid taking on other people’s “stuff”.  Or, you may be pushing your own “stuff” on to others.  The Emperor is the father in the Tarot, and when he appears reversed, there may be problems with a father figure or in taking on the role of father.  You may have trouble in your relationship with your father, or, if you are a father, with your children.  Your father may be ill.

Next Up: Responsibility

As we said earlier, both of the last two weeks of March are Heavy.  We’ve already introduced the 3/27 New Moon, at…

Our next big Adventure is about Responsibility, as dwarf planet and Centaur Pholus Stands Still at 1am PDT 28 March, five hours after the New Moon.  A planet is at its Strongest when it Stands Still, and the New Moon will stretch Pholus-Stationary Energy over several weeks afterward.

I doubt that we can explain the difference between Blame and Responsibility too often.  In a Nutshell, Blame looks backward to Assign Cause, while Responsibility looks forward to Change Outcomes.  Yes, there may be some backward-looking to seek potential levers to facilitate Future Change, but it will be incidental.

Blame is a Universe unto itself, a Closed System.  Like Cause and Effect, when you’re inside the Bubble, you can’t see out of it.  People who can’t see beyond the opaque…

Metaphysics:  Why Vegetarian or Vegetarianism?

What is the benefit of eating a vegetarian diet and how it can be easily implemented in a person’s life, is what Sadhguru explores in this article: “What kind of food you eat should depend not on what you think about it, or on your values and ethics, but on what the body wants. When it comes to food, don’t ask your doctors or your nutrition experts. Food is about the body.”

Meditation

Find your sweet, sacred space and step inside. Set a timer for 10 -20 minutes. Bring your awareness into your breath and your heart. Soften and relax. Invite stillness to take over. Allow your thoughts to drift by like clouds and just be in the moment with all your heart.

Silently to yourself or out loud repeat the words: “

I love and honor the temple that is my body. My beauty radiates from deep inside my soul.”

When your timer goes off just be still as long as you can. Enjoy the feelings and sensations that move through you. Hold nothing tight, just flow with your breath, like a wave of possibilities.

Tarot Contemplation – The Hanged Man

It’s time for a bit of deep thinking today as you may feel that things are getting on top of you. The Hanged Man usually implies you will dig deep into your emotions and thoughts before coming up with an answer. Be careful you don’t get stuck in any negatives which may arise.

For Love: If your partner seems a little distant today it is best to give them some space. There seems to be a lot going on below the surface of their mood and if you inadvertently overstep the mark by pushing for answers, you may find yourself at the receiving end of either harsh words or silence.

For Work: This is a good day to work alone. Keep your head down and get on with the work at hand. Do not make any waves today as things may not be as they seem. Do your own thing and let others do theirs.

Eggs Benedict on potato cakes is my favorite weekend breakfast dish. We’ve been eating them for a few years now at a local brunch place.

I decided to recreate this meal at home today. It’s raining, so there’s no jogging . Yesterday, I went for an 8.5 mile jog (the farthest I’ve gone in 10 years), so it was a good time to make a fancy breakfast. This recipe has a bunch of steps and does take longer than my usual 15 minutes.  I was so eager to eat my breakfast that I forgot the avocado on top! If you’re willing to put in a little more effort, it’s worth the time.

Foodstyles:  Butter Mochi | the tasty spot

This type of sweet sticky treat comes from a type of Filipino rice cake called Kunkanin … the basic recipe is sweet rice flour (Mochiko flour), coconut milk, a couple of egg yolks, a little water and cane sugar.  Butter mochi adds tablespoons of butter to the mix, and you can always top it off with shredded sweet coconut. You can either oil your pans, or roll up your mochi batter like tamales and steam them in banana leaves for yet another yummy variation of this recipe (Suman, sweet sticky rice tamale).

Mochi is really popular in Hawaii due to the large Asian population. There are so many different kinds of mochi that I have yet to try them all. Some are

Tarot Contemplation – Justice

The Justice card shows you where something in your life may be out of balance. Keep an eye out today for anything that seems unfair to you and act accordingly. You are aiming for harmony today so any interactions need to be handled with logic and intellect as opposed to emotional outbursts.

For Love: When dealing with your love life do not get too caught up in who is right and who is wrong. If you do, any discussions you are having could quickly turn into an argument. State your case, listen to the other person, and find mutual ground to go forward.

For Work: You may have more on your plate today than you care to deal with. You need to prioritise any tasks which come to hand and, if possible, distribute part of your heavy workload to someone else if you cannot manage on your own. The Justice card can help with this organization as it is all about balance and fairness.
