Seeds for Meditation ~ “A Newly Rich Life With Yourself,” by Martha Nussbaum

O WildeDo not despise your inner world. That is the first and most general piece of advice I would offer. Our society is very outward-looking, very taken up with the latest new object, the latest piece of gossip, the latest opportunity for self-assertion and status. But we all begin our lives as helpless babies, dependent on others for comfort, food, and survival itself. And even though we develop a degree of mastery and independence, we always remain alarmingly weak and incomplete, dependent on others and on an uncertain world for whatever we are able to achieve.

As we grow, we all develop a wide range of emotions responding to this predicament: fear that bad things will happen and that we will be powerless to ward them off; love for those who help and support us; grief when a loved one is lost; hope for good things in the future; anger when someone else damages something we care about. Our emotional life maps our incompleteness: A creature without any needs would never have reasons for fear, or grief, or hope, or anger. But for that very reason we are often ashamed of our emotions, and of the relations of need and dependency bound up with them. […] People don’t know how to deal with their own emotions, or to communicate them to others. When they are frightened, they don’t know how to say it, or even to become fully aware of it. Often they turn their own fear into aggression. Often, too, this lack of a rich inner life catapults them into depression in later life. We are all going to encounter illness, loss, and aging, and we’re not well prepared for these inevitable events by a culture that directs us to think of externals only, and to measure ourselves in terms of our possessions of externals.

What is the remedy of these ills? A kind of self-love that does not shrink from the needy and incomplete parts of the self, but accepts those with interest and curiosity, and tries to develop a language with which to talk about needs and feelings. Storytelling plays a big role in the process of development. As we tell stories about the lives of others, we learn how to imagine what another creature might feel in response to various events. At the same time, we identify with the other creature and learn something about ourselves. As we grow older, we encounter more and more complex stories — in literature, film, visual art, music — that give us a richer and more subtle grasp of human emotions and of our own inner world.

So my second piece of advice, closely related to the first, is: Read a lot of stories, listen to a lot of music, and think about what the stories you encounter mean for your own life and lives of those you love. In that way, you will not be alone with an empty self; you will have a newly rich life with yourself, and enhanced possibilities of real communication with others.

—–

Discussion about enjoying A Newly Rich Life With Yourself:

1 – What do you understand by a self-love that does not shrink from the needy and incomplete parts of the self?

2 – Can you share a personal experience of a time when you discovered a newly rich life with yourself?

3 – What works for you in relating to yourself at a deeper level?

Theosophy ~ AS ABOVE, SO BELOW – Part I ~ by Sri Raghavan Iyer

as above

Thus is repeated on Earth the mystery enacted, according to the Seers, on the divine plane. The ‘Son’ of the immaculate Celestial Virgin (or the undifferentiated cosmic protyle, Matter in its infinitude) is born again on Earth as the Son of the terrestrial Eve – our mother Earth, and becomes Humanity as a total – past, present, and future – for Jehovah or Jod-he-vau-he is androgyne, or both male and female. Above, the Son is the whole KOSMOS; below, he is MANKIND.

The Secret Doctrine, i 60

The mystery of immaculate conception is inherently inseparable from the magic of the Tetraktis, which, Pythagoras taught, is too sacred to be spoken of and should rather be the subject of profound meditation over a lifetime. “The triad or triangle becomes Tetraktis, the Sacred Pythagorean number, the perfect Square, and a 6-faced cube on Earth.” The Tetraktis is incarnated by the enlightened being, the Initiate, who is more than Atma-Buddhi-Manas. If the Initiate were only Atma-Buddhi-Manas, he would be on so high a plane of universal consciousness that he would hardly be able to incarnate. The Initiate is Atma-Buddhi-Manas plus the visualized essence extracted from all the lower principles and planes so as to serve as a stable focus for the immortal Triad in space and time. The Initiate permanently synthesizes individuation and universalization. The universal principles are brought together through Buddhi in an individuated, perfected instrument, which exemplifies the Tetraktis. This exalted condition is founded upon the metaphysical axiom in all spiritual growth that the higher one ascends, the more one’s sense of being is essentially a mode of participation in cosmic principles.

Atma-Buddhi-Manas cannot incarnate in personal consciousness as long as its dominant concerns are almost entirely bound up with pleasure and pain, fame and shame, gain and loss. These evanescent if hectic preoccupations bind together the skandhas and colour the composite vestures, producing an illusory panorama which people commonly call life, but which is viewed by the Adept as the night of nescience.

The only way one can activate the higher faculties is by a conscious and continuous attunement to universal principles. Atman is an unconditionally universal essence, while Buddhi is connected with Mahabuddhi and Manas derives from Mahat. The Mahatma is one whose mind has become “like a becalmed and boundless ocean” – the ocean of cosmic ideation – and whose heart has become the hebdomad, the Dhyan Chohanic heart that pulses at the core of all manifestation. The uninitiated cannot understand this owing to the tenacious sense of separateness that attaches to the personality but which is entirely inapplicable to the Adept. The Adept cannot be sundered from the whole of Nature, but is truly, as in Leonardo’s diagram, the man within the man, the enlightened cosmic man that overbroods man as a unit and whose unity is mirrored in that unit. The Atma-Buddhi-Manas of the Adept is necessarily inseparable from the Atma-Buddhi-Manas of individual human beings. The Adept is verily the spiritual soul of all humanity.

Human beings represent varying degrees of self-consciousness in inverse proportion to their personal attachment to the limited modes of life available in the world of sensation. Like assertive adolescents, they are engrossed in the Mahamaya, partly because they wholly identify with name and form and pant with thirst for embodied life and an ever-present fear of pain and deprivation. Yet, while the human condition is characterized by avidya, all individuals are fundamentally light-rays from the same luminous source. They are most likely to experience their essential humanity in deep sleep, where even those who are demons by day become like little children. According to the Upanishadic teachings, all phenomenal distinctions disappear in deep sleep. There is no father and no mother; there is no husband and no wife, no brother and no sister, no enemy and no friend; there is neither young nor old, neither male nor female. The distinctions that people make entirely disappear in sushupti. During deep sleep the soul is able to speak its own language, what Erich Fromm called “the forgotten language”, which was once known as the language of the gods. This is the language of unconditioned consciousness in which our pristine humanity comes into its own. Human beings are most assured when they are least deluded. The Mahatma is totally free from all delusion and can fathom the secret heart, the pulsing reverberation of the whole of humanity that gives its forward impulse to evolution.

When spiritual knowledge becomes conscious awareness, wisdom through use, Gupta Vidya becomes Paramarthasatya. Paramartha is the ultimate comprehension of Satya, the truth of all things, of Sat, pure being, the ideal universe. Paramarthasatya is consummate comprehension of the noumenal universe that does not manifest but is the Divine Ground spoken of by mystics, which is latent in Hiranyagarbha, the divine bosom, and animated by Mahat, divine thought. The mystery of immaculate conception has to do with the paradox that the most fully incarnated being is also the least incarnated. While this is too enigmatic to reduce to discursive logic, it is intuitively clear that the more complete the incarnation, the less is the being involved in incarnation in the sense of attachment to so-called living. The paradox is deeply enshrined in the mystery of the immaculate conception:

The Primordial Substance had not yet passed out of its precosmic latency into differentiated objectivity, or even become the (to man, so far,) invisible Protyle of Science. But, as the hour strikes and it becomes receptive of the Fohatic impress of the Divine Thought (the Logos, or the male aspect of the Anima Mundi, Alaya) – its heart opens. It differentiates, and the THREE (Father, Mother, Son) are transformed into four. Herein lies the origin of the double mystery of the Trinity and the immaculate Conception.

The Secret Doctrine, i 58

At the dawn of manifestation, Mulaprakriti, the Germ, which is the Father-Mother potentially and the point in every atom, is latent in cosmic substance. When the Germ is awakened by the descending ray, Divine Thought becomes the inseminating force which activates the sleeping energy within every life-atom. Then the three become the four through the transformation of the primordial Triad in a pure state of Parabrahmic latency into a creative Logos that lights up and makes Mulaprakriti radiant. It thereby becomes Daiviprakriti. also known as Brahma Vach, Divine Wisdom, the Verbum, the Word, the Light of the Logos. This gives rise to the manifest universe. The same idea is found in Aryasanga ‘s Precepts for Yoga in a metaphorical form, indicating that absolute Unity may not be comprehensible to the individual unless that absolute Unity is seen in relation to primordial, indestructible matter and also in relation to eternal duration:

If thou wouldest believe in the Power which acts within the root of a plant, or imagine the root concealed under the soil, thou hast to think of its stalk or trunk and of its leaves and flowers. Thou canst not imagine that Power independently of these objects. Life can be known only by the Tree of Life.

The Secret Doctrine, i 58

To visualize the invisible Root, it is easier to think as well of the massive trunk and its many branches. This is a cosmic analogue to something that can be actualized within the human constitution, as suggested by Bhavani Shankar in his Commentary on the Gita. It is veiled in the sacred teaching of the lotus, which is “the product of heat (fire) and water (vapour or Ether)”. Lotus plants are phanerogamous, containing in their seeds complete representations, as prototypes, of the future plant. The lotus is a representation in the vegetable kingdom of a sacred macrocosmic mystery, which is why the spiritual centres in the human constitution have from the most ancient times been compared to lotuses. Bhavani Shankar speaks of the thousand-petalled lotus in the brain, which is also referred to in the Bhagavad Gita and which symbolizes the radiance and the richness of the energy-field that is latent in human beings. The Guru can activate the spiritual seed in the disciple who is ready. This would also have a bearing upon the mystery of the caduceus. When a disciple has reached a moment of ripeness in inward development, it is possible for active Buddhi, or what is called in The Voice of the Silence, Kundalini, that mysterious energy which flows through two alternating currents intertwined, to become a reality. Thus a creative fusion of consciousness can be attained wherein the Third Eye may open, the eye for which there is no past, present or future, the eye of spiritual vision, of universal wisdom and of inner enlightenment, the eye of Shiva, the eye of Dangma.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ~ GENERAL PLANETARY INFLUENCES ~ SEPTEMBER 8-14, 2014, by Beverley Taylor

ThebesPlease note I will not be doing any horoscopes for the next 2 weeks, as I’m away on holiday in Orlando for a week from 15.9.2014 for my son’s wedding there.

—–

Not a great deal of planetary movement this week, although on Sunday Mars does move into enthusiastic, positive Sagittarius.

The Sun is now halfway through methodical, meticulous, fussy, scrupulous Virgo, with a very detailed and perfectionist outlook.

The Moon starts the week in emotional, responsive, sensitive Pisces, with a Full Moon Tuesday, making us prone to possible over-reactions. On Wednesday it moves into active, excitable, impulsive Aries. On Saturday it moves into defensive, possessive, security conscious Taurus, finishing the week there.

Mercury is now settled in diplomatic, peace-loving, harmonious Libra, causing some indecision at times.

Venus is now settled in idealistic, reticent, picky, curious Virgo.

Mars remains in irrational, jealous, over-reactive, Scorpio, just until Saturday, when it moves into challenging, extrovert, outspoken Sagittarius.

Jupiter is now approximately one third of the way through benevolent, extrovert, positive, expansive Leo, staying there for several months making us benevolent and kind-hearted.

Saturn remains in responsible, shrewd, strong-willed Scorpio, until the end of 2014. It is now traveling Direct, enabling self expansion in some respects.

Uranus remains in assertive, blunt, energetic, self-willed Aries, for several years, and can make us individualistic and rebellious, unexpected events or disruptive emotional matters, may distract us, or help us see things differently. Uranus is currently travelling Retrograde until shortly before Christmas, helping us come up with ingenious ideas, with a need to use them creatively.

Neptune remains in sensitive, intuitive Pisces for the foreseeable future, and helps us gradually develop more empathy, compassion, and build understanding, in a wide variety of ways, but also indicates a need to remain realistic. Neptune is now traveling Retrograde until Mid December, indicating boundaries between reality and illusion may blur at times, causing possible confusion, with a need to look at people and situations realistically.

Pluto remains in Capricorn for quite a few years, so is a very long term influence, showing knowledge gradually acquired on deeper levels, with balance, & realistic ways of recycling & developing our intuitive knowledge further, to use practically. Pluto travels Retrograde until late September, with a relentless search for inner truth, furthering our self knowledge approached the right way.

I Ching ~ Week of September 7, 2014

MENG#4 Meng ~ Without Experience

Above: Ken Mountain Firm rooted, nothing to lose
Below: K’an Water Flowing fast, possible danger
The Wisdom:

The tree is bearing fruit
What has been nurtured has taken root
The fruit is not yet ripe
Take of the fruit now, you will fall ill

In stillness you will hear the voice of spirit calling you to greatness. By listening with trust you can be led to a grand situation that will need time to mellow and mature. You will feel the power in your veins. The ego will likely say: Take it; go for it before it fades. If you move too quickly into the core of the situation, you will find that you do not have the information and the capacity to deal with energy such as this.

What is stirring in you has the depth of many layers, most are hidden To decipher the messages in stillness you will hear the truth that is telling you to hide and conceal your lust and desire for an outcome that will serve you. You need to know more about the essence of the situation before you commit to entering into the flow. The benefit now is to come to the stillness of the mountain.

Do not try to make it appear that you know what you do not. This would be folly and would create obstacles that will be difficult to overcome

The stillness of the mountain is not still at all;
Water flows from the mountain.
This is the symbolic spring of youthful beginnings and experiences;
A youthful attitude now brings success without bounds.

Within your reach, or perhaps just grasped, is the new. Newness is coming or has just come to your work and studies, whether these are inner or outer. In your present relationships and associations or that are on their way to you, your attitude about love, companionship, friendship and commerce requires renewal.

There is some danger here: Moving without the understanding that you are in a situation where you do not yet have the knowledge to undertake would have you move too fast. At this point accept that you do not yet have sufficient knowledge. Therefore, start slowly so that you can absorb the new, hidden, information being shown to you about yourself and your situation.

You are in a great position. But you must accept that in this situation you know very little about how to proceed. Revel in the fact that you are a beginner. Seek the information, teacher or guide who can mentor you into this next stage of abundance and love; take their advice and then go into the quiet of your heart. You are again the student. Accept and embrace that place.

The spring emerges through the rock on the mountain.
This is the new showing itself.
Be steady and clear.
Observe and open your mind and heart.
Be without fear or judgment.

Shoshin is a term in Zen meaning “beginner’s mind.” It refers to cultivating an attitude of openness, eagerness and lack of preconceptions when studying a subject, just as a beginner in that subject would—even if one is already at an advanced level.

Move too fast now you will fall impotent, unable to perform. This will leave you frustrated and the ego will have its way with you telling you are not enough, and that will stop you in your motion toward completion and greatness.

Being of the mind of the young student, the attitude of the beginner, will serve you well. In fact it is the only way in which you can proceed and be free of danger. Be as still and calm as the mountain now and allow the coming flow of knowledge that you will find only in humility. The knowledge you need will be like a spring, that with care soon can become the river. In this way, you will fill the gaps in your knowledge, and this will allow you to be carried to a peaceful and joyous success where you will find abundance, love and peace of mind. Go to the teacher you trust and offer alms of respect and gratitude. This may be a person or it may be the inner voice of wisdom reached in the silence of your quiet mind in meditation.

Each of us has unseen teachers who are wise, patient and kind. You are now at the place where you will be able to hear their voices and feel their compassion and love. So the question comes: “What do I do to connect?” The answers are easy: Be patient, compassionate and kind, and each day, be in wonder as the sun rises and sets. When you see the beauty of nature, when you hear the night bird sing, be as a child whose innocence is in awe of all that is new.

When children first hear an airplane flying overhead they stop in amazement. It seems to linger in the sky above. They look up and listen and watch as it makes its way slowly across their field of vision until it is out of sight. As we became accustomed to the sight, we become complacent as other airplanes make their way across our sky, and we hardly notice them. But then a helicopter would fly our way and we were in wonderment again. The pattern would repeat, and complacency would once again take the place of wonder.

Remember all those many years ago when you would watch bees and ants and be fully engaged with no sense of time? Go into that place and shed the cloak of complacency and see the wonder around you now. Share your vision and feelings with those around you, with no fear of embarrassment, shame or judgment.

In our youth it would seem that summer would never come and a year was such a long time. As we become older a year seemed like just a moment, and our youth seemed to have slipped away. It has not: All that has happened is we have become “sophisticated” and complacent, thinking we know sooo much.

Now the benefit is to teach what you know and listen; make way for the new. This is a path to freedom of thought, consciousness and spirituality. This hexagram comes to help us return to that state of the child in wonderment of the new. Be still and learn. Be still and listen, as you then become the mentor and teacher.

Dignity, integrity, compassion and kindness are your allies in the adventure before you. You are coming to know the unknowable, the hidden truth that is deep within you. You are both student and teacher. In accepting this with a child’s enthusiasm and vision, you will remove obstacles that have been blocking your way toward the waiting abundance, love and spirit. You become the innocent.

Come to know the voice of your heart. As you trust the voice of your heart, your inner knowing, your flow will be like the water that flows from the mountain made full by the spring rains.

In complacency you become dulled to the love around you. This causes loneliness and frustration. In your relationship, friendships, projects, career, or in your own inner journey of spiritual evolution, it will be of great benefit to refresh your knowledge and attitudes. You must learn new ways and think in a new way about how things are showing in your life and how things work. Quiet the ego and move into your inner knowing, your intuitive force that never disappoints. Then when you come to the realization that you do not have enough knowledge to proceed, something wonderful will happen: You will become the student again, the beginner who is filled with wondering and wonderment.

Recall what brought you joy and what you did for fun as a child and do it now. Skip down the lane, play with clay, steal a kiss, do finger painting. Whatever it is, reignite your innocence and sense of wonder. If you had trauma as a child around trust or love, accept that it happened, write about it, process it, and let it go. Move into a different pool of conscious activity that is joyous and filled with gratitude.

Discard the old and open to new ways of being and doing. In the process, be patient, kind, and compassionate with yourself and others as you begin learning new patterns. Observe the actions of happy children and bring that back into your life. By following the advice and vision of this hexagram, your frustrations will dissipate and you will feel the exhilaration of youth, no matter what your age.

Love is the result, process and lubricant to keep you in the knowing of your heart, while you let the mind run where it will…listen, let it go and return to the heart.

We are in revolutionary times where the revolution is in spirit and spirit is the companion of love. Feel love, be love and you will return to the knowing of the bubbling well of youthful enthusiasm tempered by a clear and meditative mind.

You are the one you have been waiting for.

Many blessings

BE MINDFUL. Be mindful of your own daily ups and downs, the joys and pains, and how that it’s what makes up the circle of life.

As Mark Twain once said,”What is joy without sorrow? What is health without illness? You have to experience each if you are to appreciate the other. There is always going to be suffering. It’s how you look at your suffering, how you deal with it, that will define you.”

As much as possible, I try to stick to the technical aspects of astrology on this blog. That means I avoid editorials. But, tonight, I am compelled to write an editorial.

I believe that we (collectively and individually) stand at a critically important fork in the road. It began in August and will continue at least through the end of September.  (Actually, it is a much larger period.)  I call this period the “Grand Yod of 2014.”  What makes it “grand” is the involvement of outer planets, namely Jupiter, Neptune, and Pluto.  For some, the Full Moon of Monday September the 8th will be a particularly intense point.

Important to note is the fact that many of us often face turning points in our lives. But this one will be more noteworthy than most. The outcome is difficult to see. I can only tell you that…

2 Tbsp. sunflower seeds
1 Tbsp. unsweetened shredded coconut

Directions

Melt the cacao butter on the stove over very low heat. To avoid burning the butter, you can create a makeshift double boiler. Put a little hot water into a metal pot or bowl and then use another smaller metal bowl or metal cup for the solid chunks of cacao butter. Place the smaller metal cup into the larger bowl, and try to be sure that not one drop of water enters the cup with the butter in it. Gently stir the cacao butter while it heats up.

Remove the melted cacao butter from heat and pour into a large mixing bowl. Add the cacao powder and agave nectar and mix thoroughly and quickly. Next add in approximately half of each of the dry ingredients and stir. You will need to be quick with this step to ensure it is mixed well.

On a sheet of baking paper spread out the mixture into an even thickness into the shape of a rectangle. Put a second sheet of baking paper on top and press down firmly on the mixture. You can use a rolling pin if you have one or just give yourself an arm workout by pressing down on the mixture with your hands.

Take off the top layer of baking paper and add the rest of the dry ingredients on top of the mixture.

Fold the edge of the bottom sheet of baking paper towards the centre of the mixture, to roll the mixture over itself (a bit like rolling sushi). Be sure to press down firmly to keep the mixture warm with the body temperature from your hands and to keep the mixture sticking together. Roll until you have a nice fat tube created, and be sure to pull the tube away from the baking paper as you roll.

Alternatively you can roll the outside of the tube across a plate of shredded coconut.

Pop the chocolate tube into the fridge for an hour to make sure it’s nice and hard. This will make it easier to cut into the thickness of rounds that you prefer using a sharp straight edged knife.

Store in a container with a lid and pop a few in a sandwich bag when you’re ready to hit the road. Safe, healthy travels!

DISCUSSION ~ CHAKRA SYSTEM ~ A Closer Look At The Chakras And How They Influence Your Life

meditating chakras_3Each of your Chakras has its own unique “personality”, each controlling a specific aspect of your life. So if you’re experiencing any form of physical or mental shortcomings, limitations or challenges in your life, there’s a high chance one of your Chakras is weak or closed.

But how do you tell which of your Chakras are strong, and which need repairing? Simple–take a good look at the circumstances in your life.

Use the guide below and evaluate yourself.

The Foot Chakra influences your unique life experience.

You know your Root Chakra is WEAK or CLOSED when you’re stuck in an unfulfilling and unrewarding career, and you never seem to have enough money–which leaves you worried and in debt. Spending money is a harrowing experience for you, as you doubt your ability to budget effectively. You suffer from weight or body issues, which leave you feeling unworthy and uncomfortable in your own skin.

The Sacral Chakra influences your sexuality.

Orgasms are mind-blowing, and you and your partner often orgasm at the same moment. You make time to have sex at least a few times a week, even if you’ve been married or attached to the same person for years. You are always able to attract the right partners–compatible people who nourish you, fill you with joy and make you a better person.

You know your Sacral Chakra is WEAK or CLOSED when the thought of sex conjures images of guilt and pain in your mind. You rarely have the time or inclination to have sex, and when you do, it’s lackluster. You and your partner rarely orgasm at the same time, and premature or delayed ejaculation may be a frequent problem. You struggle to see yourself as ‘sexy’, and sometimes wonder how anyone could desire you. Your career and personal life are enriched as a result.

You know your Throat Chakra is WEAK or CLOSED when you constantly feel like nobody cares about your opinions, and that you have nothing of value to say. You’re likely to be known as the ‘quiet one’ in your professional and social circles, and you frequently settle with following other people’s opinions. You have a vivid picture of where your life is headed, and the people around you are likely to rely on you for guidance and advice.

You know your Intuitive Chakra is WEAK or CLOSED if you feel lost and helpless when faced with decisions and judgment calls. You are indecisive, uncommitted and unconfident of the decisions you end up making, because you have a history of making the wrong ones. You feel spiritually lost, and your true purpose is unclear to you. You often get headaches and feel tension in your brow area.

The Crown Chakra influences your connection to source.

Location: Top of the head
The Chakra of divine consciousness.
Energies: Air, meditative, intuition, promotes thought

You know your Crown Chakra is STRONG when you perpetually feel connected to a higher power, be it God, Universal Consciousness or simply your higher self. As you go through your daily life, you are always reminded that you are being watched over, and you feel immense gratitude for the universal love and appreciation you feel towards yourself and others. Others describe you as “glowing”.

You know your Crown Chakra is WEAK or CLOSED when you feel little or no connection to a higher power, and always feel alone. You feel unworthy of spiritual help, and perhaps even angry that your higher power has abandoned you. You often suffer from migraines and tension headaches.

Herbalogy ~ An Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine, by Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), alongside Ayurveda, is one of the two oldest established paradigms of herbal medicine that people still practice. “It is the second-largest medical system in the world after Western medicine,” according to Alan Tillotson, Ph.D., R.H., a Chinese herbalist in private practice in Wilmington, Delaware, and a prominent member of The American Herbalists Guild.

The history of Chinese herbalism is one of persistent and ongoing processes of observation and refinement of ideas in the real world. Centuries of formulation of theories, and testing of these theories in practice, have resulted in the system we recognize as Traditional Chinese Medicine today.

Fundamentally, the ancient sages concluded that “like increases like”. In other words, an external factor, when introduced to the body, will create a similar reaction in the body of the person experiencing the change. For example, going out into the cold weather will make your body cold. Battling the wind will make your metabolism instable. Eating heavy food will make your body heavy. This seems obvious on the surface, and it is ultimately pretty easy to grasp intuitively, but putting together all the intricacies of every possible effect of every possible natural medicine on every possible person is a daunting task. This metaphor of energetics creates a system that is complex enough to represent the tremendous complexity of the human being, yet simple enough in concept to be useful.

Energetic evaluation of the body is based on experiencing the body with the human senses. Since everyone experiences the world in subtly different ways, it takes centuries, potentially, for a consensus to develop among practitioners about any given remedy. It creates a structure in which herbs can consistently be identified and understood. According to energetic systems, including TCM, the sum total of an herb is the important consideration.

For example, we may know from modern science that an herb has antibacterial activity. We want to give that herb to treat an acute bacterial infection. But we also know that the herb tends to increase body temperature — it is “hypermetabolic, or “hot”. If the patient has a fever, or is a person who is particularly prone to develop inflammation that is difficult to control, we would think twice about using that specific herb. It might kill the bacterium very nicely, and treat the infection, but the whole person would be worse off as a net total than before we started. Instead, we would seek out an herb that would kill the infection, but which had a “cooling” energy. This difference in approach can make a world of difference in clinical practice, and gives us an invaluable tool in managing a case for the best in the long term, and in treating the person as a whole human being. We don’t want to make people better in the short run, while we make them worse in the long run.

The properties of herbs are collated systematically according to their energetics — taste, temperature, effect before and after digestion and similar factors.

The TCM system of health care begins with a differentiation of the individual’s energetic situation, starting with the most basic divisions, and extending the process of differentiation to a great degree of individuality.

TCM is based on the principle of unconditional, unifying energy of all phenomena. Called “qi” (pronounced “chee”), it is ephemeral, active, constantly changing and warm. Qi is vital energy, the basis for all organic life, and for all inorganic substances, as well. It is the animating force that gives us our capacity to move, think, feel, and work. When one is young and energetic, one has abundant qi, but as one’s qi declines with age, one becomes subject to degenerative diseases and lowered vitality. This concept of qi is the basis for the success of TCM in the area of health maintenance and longevity.

Qi is all about movement, evolution and change. It’s ephemeral, so we perceive its effects, not its substance. It is associated with movement, odor, sound and form. It is connected with the intuitive, unlimited and spiritual qualities of life. The great symbol of qi is the sun, the most unlimited source of energy we experience in daily life.

In the Chinese view, the primary principle of health is recognizing and promoting the flow of qi and eliminating its blockage. All TCM techniques, whether herbs, diet, acupuncture, or others, are ultimately aimed at balancing qi.

Each person is a garden in which doctor and patient together cultivate health. Every being has a unique ecology to be planted, tilled and tended. Like a gardener uses compost, water and weeding to grow robust plants, TCM uses acupuncture, herbs and food, seeking to tenderly nurture and nudge the entire garden back into harmony, to recover and prolong good health.

YinYang2TCM views people as worlds in miniature, so it seeks to improve our capacity to balance and replenish our own capabilities. TCM minimizes the erosion of our soil by enriching it, makes the most of the flow of nutrients by increasing circulation, and helps avert blocks that obstruct the movement of bodily fluids and energies. Therefore, TCM anticipates problems by upholding our interior landscape.

Contrast that worldview with that of contemporary medicine, which looks for “busted” parts to replace. Typically, modern conventional medicine intervenes only after a crisis arises, whereas TCM aims to correct depletion and stagnation at earlier stages, avoiding greater problems later on.

While Chinese medicine excels at enhancing recuperative power, immunity, and the capacity for pleasure, work, and creativity, it can remedy ailments as well.

Creating Balance

According to Chinese cosmology, the whole of creation is born from the marriage of two opposite principles, Yin and Yang. Earth and Heaven, winter and summer, night and day, cold and hot, wet and dry, inner and outer, body and mind are reflections of this pairing of opposites. Creating and maintaining a harmony between these opposites means health, good weather, and good fortune, while disharmony brings disease, disaster, and bad luck. The entire aim of TCM is to restore harmony, in the world and in the body.

TCM is based upon a universal notion, expressed in nature in bi-polar terms Yin and Yang. Energies that characterize the complementary yet opposing materialization of all phenomena, yin and yang are the most basic divisions of energy in the universe. That which is above corresponds to a below; heat is complimented by cold, night is pursued by day. In all of manifest creation, qi is divided and apparent in duality.

The concept of yin and yang pervades all of traditional Chinese thought, not just in medicine, but in other forms of science and art as well. The concept of yin and yang is the idea that everything has its opposite.

We might think of this as two basic forces operating in nature. One force is an outward, expansive, linear, positive force that changes things. The other is an inward, contractive, downward, negative force that is hidden and unmanifest. The outward force is the yang force and is associated with heaven, light, up, daytime, male traits, function and so forth. The inward force is the yin force and is associated with such things as darkness, winter, nighttime, female traits and structure. All matter and energy in the universe can be represented on the spectrum of yin merging into yang. Health is yin and yang in balance.

Tasty Medicine

Taste is one way of deciding which herbs have the needed actions. It represents a sensory method of ascertaining the biochemical action of a given herb or food, in other words, the remedy’s “energy”.

The five tastes include pungent (spicy), salty, sour, bitter and sweet.

We do not actually have taste buds for pungent. It is called a taste, but is more correctly an irritation of the tissues- a mouth sensation. Spicy taste stimulates, warms and dries dampness. It is used in conditions of excess dampness (mucus) in the lungs, which are associated with the metal element. Spicy taste increases digestion, circulation and secretions.

Salty foods, such as seaweeds, bring out the yang flavor of food and provoke a yang effect in the body. Salty taste retains fluids, moistens tissue and supports the kidneys. It softens masses, such as cysts and benign tumors, and relaxes muscles.

Sour taste is found in foods containing organic acids. Sour taste enhances digestion, especially of proteins. It also enhances liver function. Sour also dries mucus, tightens tissues, stimulates digestion and promotes bile flow. The concept of sour taste also incorporates the tissue sensation of astringent, which is the tightening and drying of tissue.

Bitter taste is, all in all, detoxifying and anti-inflammatory.  Bitter remedies can be used in small doses before meals as a digestive preparation, stimulating secretion of digestive juices and provoking both appetite and efficient digestion. Bitter taste is cold, so is used to “clear heat”- reduce inflammation, in Western terms.

Sweet taste is nourishing, so is used to tonify. It builds, feeds and harmonizes tissue. The waste byproducts of this building process are acid, though, so we need to be conscious of keeping the body pH balanced when we are in a rebuilding, healing, phase.

Turn up the Heat

An important factor of Chinese energetics is the temperature of the disease. TCM classifies herbal actions based on temperature, and the concept includes influence on metabolic rate and effect on actual body temperature.

A good way to understand the broad concept of temperature is a spectrum from hypometabolic (cold) to hypermetabolic (hot). As the metabolic rate increases, more calories per minute are burned. Temperature and all other biological processes increase. The opposite is true for the cold direction.

Less extreme conditions are classified as warm or cool and most illnesses fall in this range.

TCM always has something to offer for nagging chronic complaints that bother us. Western medicine may heroically rescue us, but Chinese medicine can protect and preserve our health every day. These two great systems offer a great set of complements to each other.

Just for Today … Innovate!

kitesINNOVATE.  A kite flies because of pressure dynamics in the air, but the string facilitates that condition. Cut the string and it will crash. In other words, constraints can be guides. Placing limitations on processes is not normally associated with innovation. However, as explained in this article, setting boundaries and playing within them can foster creative solutions to complex problems, encourage a sense of humility in acknowledging the things that one cannot do, and even drive one towards “perfection”.

There are no limitations to the mind except those we acknowledge.

Happy aloha Friday. Life is in a gentle breath of wind
Dark are the sea cliffs of kahikinui;
when the mists creep, it is a sign of a storm.
Creeping rain means Trouble is approaching.

This is taken from a chant in the legend of Pamoano, who saw his own death approaching.  When seeing the dark clouds with rain mists its cleansing Hawaiʻi nei of all bad.  It is refreshing to smell the fresh clean air after a rain.

Seeds for Meditation ~ On Awakening, by Jorge Enriquez

HPS and Grandmaster Jorge Enriquez amidst the grand columns of the Temple of Karnak, Egypt, September 3, 2014
HP and Grandmaster Jorge Enriquez amidst the grand columns of the Temple of Karnak, Egypt, September 3, 2014

In procession we walked through the Temple Karnak, all of us in white from head to toe. In silence we walked past columns and statues, silent witnesses of times past and present. As one by one we walked through the gates of Aten and climbed above the temples mounds to find a place to position ourselves in wait for the morning sun to rise. As Ra peeked over the horizon, we were greeted with light. The essence of the Bornless One blazed upon us all. His essence washed upon us as each in turn reflected His light back to the universe. In unison we praised.

This journey has awakened within me the memory of my existence, my secret within. my Light within. My reason. My lifes journey.

Just For Today ~ Live For This Moment (song and lyrics by Phillip Fraser)

Grandmaster Phillip Fraser ~ “Live For This Moment”

live for this moment
before the moment passes
before the moments gone

i seek to walk in the light
carry the banner to shatter the darkness
shadow he walks beside
lightens the load when heavy of conscious
choose what to do with your life
look deep inside and you might discover
the holiest secrets reside
just wake up and…

live for this moment,
before the moment passes
before the moments gone
before the moment passes
before the moments gone
gone, gone, gone gone gone gone

i seek to walk in the light
carry that weight when no one will bother
to take the time looking for signs
forgot to remember to answer the questions
what should i do with my life
do i care if i rise, care if i fall, care if i try, care if i die, care if i live, care if i fly
how could it be that the harder i search, the fewer i find with spirits aligned
living a life, not of my design
learned that in time it’ll all be alright
sometimes the only one willing to put up a fight
and if thats what destined, then ill earn my own lessons

the prize in the pieces, the silence that seizes your breathe
when you live in regret.
the spirit that takes you when you surrender and you’ve forgotten all of your stress
this second to notice, just savor the moments cuz when it is gone there will be nothing left
if this is the road I’m sent down to travel you now on this mission i’ll give it my best
give it my best, til the day that i rest, or the day that i’m gone, remembered in song
maybe its all just a moment in time, frozen in time for those listening (listen-on)
still i have my healthy doubts,
but one thing i know,
if we just could let go, we might just…

live for this moment,
before the moment passes
before the moments gone
before the moment passes
before the moments gone

live for this moment,
before the moment passes
before the moments gone
before the moment passes

Before this moment passes
before this moment passes

Daily Chabad ~ “Soul-Body Bonding,” based on letters and talks of the Rebbe, Rabbi M. M. Schneerson

swirly head

The human mind despises the body that houses it,
but the soul has only love.

The mind would soar to the heavens,
but for a body that chains it to the earth.
The mind would be consumed in divine oneness,
but for the body’s delusion of otherness,
as though it had made itself.

But the soul sees only G‑d.

In that very delusion of otherness,
in that madness of the human ego,
even there, the soul sees only G‑d.

For she says, “This, too, is truth.
This is a reflection of the Essence of all things,
of that which truly has neither beginning nor cause.”

And so she embraces the bonds of the body,
works with the body, transforms the body.
Until the body, too, sees only G‑d.

Seeds for Meditation ~ On Knowing

_elale_kule

There are very few human beings who receive the truth, complete and staggering, by instant illumination. Most of them acquire it fragment by fragment, on a small scale, by successive developments, cellularly, like a laborious mosaic.
~ Anaïs Nin

… And yet, as that mosaic becomes complete the enlightenment process would be as if it were being experienced instantaneously.  It all comes down to that moment when you make that connection with that innermost part of your Self.  To place yourself in the front row, before your God … it’s all about that moment of communion.  And, once had, it is never lost.

Bake time: 30-40 minutes
Prep time: 20 minutes

This makes a large amount of very rich macaroni and cheese. Cut the recipe in half to serve a family of four.

Traditionally, I have always prepared macaroni and cheese using a roux based cheese sauce (or sometimes out of a blue box…. Sssssh don’t tell), but after discovering Southern Style mac n cheese, I have another favorite in my recipe box. It’s definitely a more expensive and cholesterol laden favorite. You won’t want to make this on a tight budget. This is one of those “sometimes” dishes. Sometimes you’ll make it because you want awesome mac n cheese. Most of time, you won’t want to drop all that money on cheese.

PLEASE GRATE BY HAND! I cannot stress enough that you should please, pretty pretty please, go through the trouble of grating your cheeses by hand. If you look at the ingredients…

Paradigm Shift ~ Here Comes Multidimensional Light and Earth Changes That Cognitive Dissonance Can’t Stop

erupting volcanoTHE EARTH CHANGES AND ASCENSION ॐ

At present, Earth and the Solar System is undergoing a major transformation process and acceleration of the evolution and rising of the vibration and consciousness of mankind. Earth is in a period of great transition to the 5th dimension. The new cosmic energies affect everything on earth and especially people who have now the opportunity and the chance to choose the reality that they want for them. It is a time of choice that is made in the heart and soul of each man. The Ascension of the planet and man is primarely a process, not an event for a day or year.

Accepting the exterior and interior changes with intention of raising vibration and consciousness and their Light and Love quotient, the mankind will be able to go through these changes to a new evolutionary stage of their existence on Earth. This requires a sincere desire and love light in our mind, heart and soul. It requires a solid foundation of inner balance to safely navigate these large and important changes.

Because of this evolutionary acceleration and increase of the vibration, the flow of time changes from a linear to a non-linear flow of time and to a permanent now moment.

The changes generally can produce fear and anxiety. It is important to learn to live with love, trust and joy. Love is the antidote to fear and also the key to entry into the New Earth and the New Energy.

It is not the end of the world or a time of destruction, even if humanity has passed very close to it. It is the end of an old energy and a system of things that will simply not work in the new energy and vibrancy and it is a beginning of a new cycle of cosmic evolution. It is a time when we must release the old energies of the past and karmic baggage of the 3rd dimension in the minimum percentage of 51% to continue our existence on the new Earth. Every soul is going through a period of cleansing and balancing of old karma because mankind is entering a period of great evolutionary acceleration.

It is an opportunity for graduation, renewal and of progress for the entire humanity. For this we need the unconditional love and forgiveness, openness of mind and heart, joy and passion for raising the vibration of thoughts and our being, of inner work and preparation. The physical body and the body cells and human DNA will be able to be transformed in this Ascension in a crystalline body. For this we must cooperate actively with the Ascension without opposing resistance. Resistance is primarily due to ego built on illusion and separation.

There are different “Ascension symptoms” which are actually signs of transformation in our bodies and their resistance to change. We need to incorporate enough Light in the body so that we would evolve into a higher being in the crystalline Light body. This requires preparation, personal effort and firm intention to work at three levels of our being: physical, psychological and spiritual. To achieve Heaven on Earth all three levels are necessary and essential.

Earth is heading towards Paradise which was at the beginning and from which humanity has fallen gradually in the ethereal density of the third dimension. All souls living on earth today, even if they does not remember consciously, chose before coming into this life to be here now.

It’s a great opportunity given by Divine decree and dispensation to pass along with the Earth in the 5th dimension beyond the duality and struggle of opposites and potentially free us from the cycle of incarnations in the 3-dimensional density. Everyone must discover the truth and follow his heart. Not that which is being said by one or another is important but especially what your heart has to tell you, because everyone has his own particular way.

Fortunately there is much help now provided to mankind and Earth. If you ask for divine help to Ascension, you will receive it. There is help from God, Light beings, angels and Ascended Masters who work “behind the scenes” for the good of mankind and planet Earth. It is more important than ever to ask for this help for without asking they cannot interfere with our free will. Ask and it will be given onto you, knock and it shall be opened onto you, seek and you shall find.

In coming years there will be many events, we will see and hear many unusual things, will be confusion and even chaos, but inner balance, Light and peace must be found and maintained.

The beginning of big transformations was marked by the winter solstice in 2012 when begins a new era of Light and Love, but they will continue with even greater intensity in the next 12 or 20 years, when, because of events and combination of exceptional cosmic alignments (Precession, the Solar System crossing the galactic plane and Galactic Center alignment, Photon Belt, the maximum solar activity), the Earth and mankind will have the possibility of a unique and unprecedented evolutionary leap. Light is growing right now. The Light exceeded the 50% threshold, being more powerful than the darkness that dominated the Earth so far.

Also the feminine energies will equal masculine energies, restoring balance to all levels including the cerebral hemispheres of man. Earth has long been and is still in quarantine. It is a birth of a New World, of a New everything, and that birth must be safeguarded. The quarantine is lifted. It will draw the curtain and contact with the Galactic Federation will officially become a reality for all mankind. Galactic Federation comprises a large number of civilizations with a high degree of development of consciousness.

Many people wonder how possibly can begin an era of love and Light when what we see and hear around us every day on all news channels, seems to prove otherwise. During the choosing or preparation time which we live, this is mandatory and inevitable. There is a pressure that pushes all that is hidden to surface, as all that stood up in individual and collective unconscious now to be put on the table for us to see, evaluate and choose. Absolutely none of those living on earth today is exempt from this assessment and choice whether we are fully aware of it or not.

Not all feel the changes and the energies in the same way; the change symptoms affect some more than others. It is therefore important that in these special times we live, each to be connected with his soul, to discover and follow the truth that resonates with in his heart.
