Daily Chabad ~ On Friction …

The Wise One by Chikrata http://goo.gl/JSRBif

Our souls are the finishing tools for His handiwork.

They are the plows He applies to the harsh earth so it will absorb the rains from heaven, the sandpaper to grind away the coarse surfaces of life, the polishing-cloth so that it will glimmer in the light from above.

That friction that wears us down, those sparks that fly—it is the resistance to this refining process.

And if you should ask, how could it be that G‑d’s own creation should present resistance to His infinitely powerful breath?

In truth, it cannot. But He condenses that breath into a soul, He tightly focuses her power, until the harshness of this world can seem real to her, and then she will struggle, and in that struggle she will make the world shine.

Recipe ~ Bahn Mi, Vietnamese Street Sandwiches with Pickled Veggies

bahn mi

Yield: 4 Sandwiches

Cook Time: 1 hour

Making good banh mi at home is quite easy, but can involve a bit of preparation. Simply put, you can make it as simple or thorough as you want or have time for.

Making Banh mi preparation easier is all about nailing down the assembly. Once you have your basic pantry items for banh mi, it won’t take that much more effort. The carrot and daikon pickles can be made ahead of time and be stored in the fridge for about 1 month.

Ingredients:

Caramel Ingredients

  • 3 Tbs sugar
  • 2 tbs warm water

Pork Ingredients

  • 2 lbs cubed pork belly (about 1 inch cubes) — Vegans, substitute with seitan
  • 2 large shallots, minced (about 3-4 tablespoons)
  • 1 tablespoons oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons of fish sauce
  • about 1 or 1.5 cups of water
  • 1/2 teaspoon whole black peppercorns

Banh Mi Assembly (not all required, some are optional):

  • 1 french baguette
  • pickled carrots and daikon (recipe, below)
  • fresh cilantro
  • soy sauce
  • pork liver pate
  • mayonnaise
  • thin slices of chili pepper
  • thin slices of cucumber

Directions:

For the nuoc mau (Vietnamese caramel sauce)

  1. Add sugar and water to heavy bottom sauce pan. Heat pan on medium heat and let sugar melt. As sugar begins to melt, the mixture will begin to turn to a golden brown. Using wooden spoon, stir the mixture occasionally.
  2. Do not leave the caramel sauce unattended! Once the sugar begins to melt, it will turn color very quickly. As soon as the mixture turns to a medium golden brown, immediate remove pan from heat.
  3. If the mixture is still too thick, SLOWLY and CAREFULLY add additional water 1 tablespoon at a time until the mixture becomes more watery consistency. Adding the addition water to the HOT caramel will splatter, so be careful. Quickly mix with a wooden spoon so that there are no hard lumps. When finished, set aside.

For the Pork:

  1. In medium to large sauce pan (or dutch oven), turn on heat to medium. Heat oil, then add shallots. Slowly cook shallots for about 1 minute, then add garlic. Cook both until they become soft and fragrant. Add pork belly. Cook pork belly for about 10 minutes or until all the edges are seared and browned.
  2. Add fish sauce and cook pork belly for about another 5 minutes. Add about 1 cup of water. If you need more water to cover the pork, add more until the pork is covered. Add the peppercorns. Turn heat to low and cook for about another 10 minutes. Stirring occasionally. Then add the caramel sauce.
  3. Continue braising the pork on low heat for about another 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until pork is tender. Stir occasionally.

For the Banh Mi assembly:

  1. Slice baguettes lengthwise. Add the ingredients that you want (or like) to the banh mi. Add slices of the pork belly.
  2. Enjoy!

viet pickled veggies

PICKLED VEGGIES FOR BAHN MI

1/4 lb. cucumber, julienned
1 lb. daikon, peeled and julienned
1 lb. carrots, peeled and julienned
2 tsps kosher or sea salt
1 cup unseasoned rice vinegar
1 cup sugar
1 cup water

Make sure the vegetables are fairly dry (pat them dry) so they don’t dilute the pickling liquid with excess water. Combine the vinegar, salt, sugar, and water together until the sugar dissolves. Place the vegetables in a jar large enough to fit them all and pour the pickling liquid into the jar so that all of the vegetables are submerged. Store them sealed in the jar in the refrigerator for 5 days for best flavor.

Paradigm Shift ~ Knock Down Those Walls, by Bill Donahue

jericho_walls
LET’S KNOCK THE WALL DOWN!

There is a wall that separates us from the higher realm or holy city within us.

We have to knock down that wall and we will need the heavy equipment to do it.

You can choose the equipment you wish to use. Both are the same but labeled a bit differently.

You can use the 7 chakras of the Hindu Kundalini, or the 7 Seals of the Book of Revelation.

Both of them operate in the spinal area.

You also can either choose music or om at the time of the assault
on the wall.

So let’s open the scriptures for the detailed instructions.

Joshua 6 King James Version (KJV)
3 You shall compass the city, all you men of war, and go round about the city once. This shall you do for six days.

4 And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams’ horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.

5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat.

Notice the emphasis on the seven.

jericho

Now of course this is the Biblical account of Joshua’s assault on the walls of Jericho.

But we must understand that this is pure mythology. I want you to read this report from Zeev Herzog Chief Archaeologist at the University of Tel Aviv in Tel Aviv Israel.

Please do not skip over this. Read it carefully because it will show you why the assault on the wall is your job.

From Zeev Herzog Archaeology Dept, Tel Aviv University Israel

Repeated excavations by various expeditions at Jericho whose conquest is described in the greatest of detail in the Book of Joshua have proved very disappointing.

It is agreed that the late part of the 13th century BCE (before the Christian era) the late Bronze Age is when the conquest was supposed to have taken place.

But at that time there were no cities there and no walls that could have been toppled.

Biblical scholars suggested a quarter of a century ago that the story of Joshua be considered legend and no more.

Then as more and more sites were uncovered the conclusion was bolstered that there is no factual basis for the Biblical story about the conquest by Israelite tribes in a military campaign led by Joshua.

So there it is. A mythical story was contrived that is really about the wall that blocks you from the holy city within you on the right side.

You enter into meditation. The energy begins to rise. Chakras or seals, one, two, three, four, five , six. Just as in the story which spoke of the six days.

Then on the 7th, the Rams horn a great shout, and that wall blocking you from the great light will fall and you will enter the city.

About the Rams horn. The hippocampus of your brain is the place of memory. This is where you will be restored to your true identity and enter the city.

In the Hippocampus is something called Ammons Horn. Ammons symbol was the Ram. So it is there for you.

I cannot tell you when the wall will fall for you, but it will. You can use OM as the Rams Horn or music. Whatever you wish.

The horn is sounded to stop all thought from entering in. You can hear that in many Eastern Meditations today.

So there you are:  six days circling the city. Six chakras, six seals.

Then on the 7th the wall falls and you will enter the Holy City.

Yes that Holy City is Jerusalem which means city of peace,

Not the Jerusalem you can find on a map today. This is that Jerusalem of higher consciousness reached in meditation.

As the scripture reads:

Galatians 4:24 Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. 26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

That is your city. And when that wall finally falls, you will find 12 gates that are the 12 cranial nerves of the brain which now will be vibrating in harmony with the 12 constellations of the Zodiac.

I look forward to hearing that you fought the battle of Jericho, and the walls came tumbling down.

Seeds for Meditation ~ Fluid Movement

golden wave

We are all connected, like a single, fluid mass, and this is why we are able to help each other change. When one of us begins moving forward, all those around him are pulled along.

But if you yourself are standing still, how can you expect to push someone else ahead?

If you need to help someone else overcome his fault, first find that flaw within you. Move forward in that area, and then you can pull along the other guy.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ~ August 25-31, 2014 ~ by Beverley Taylor

green shade tree - Dragana Biočanin

GENERAL PLANETARY INFLUENCES

A little more planetary movement this week, as the Sun moved into Virgo on Sunday, but apart from the Moon’s natural progress, the rest of the planets stay where they are at present, just moving by a few degrees. Next week, both Mercury and Venus move signs, but this week is fairly ‘quiet’ astrologically. As I mentioned, the Sun is now in modest, organized, modest, particular Virgo, this can make us a bit finicky at times, as we naturally want everything to be just right.

The Moon starts the week in domineering, exuberant, melodramatic Leo, with a Full Moon on Monday, making us more over-the-top in certain situations. On Tuesday it moves into responsive, inquisitive, logical Virgo. On Thursday the Moon moves into charming, harmonious, peaceful Libra. On Sunday it moves into determined, jealous, strong-willed, Scorpio, finishing the week there.

Mercury remains in balanced, decisive, fussy Virgo, this week, with a methodical, structured and detailed approach.

Venus remains in loving, expressive & excessive Leo, for this week, with possible overly dramatic reactions.

Mars remains in compulsive, envious, responsive, resourceful Scorpio, until the middle of next month, with a need for personal control over people and situations. Jupiter is now approximately one third of the way through benevolent, extrovert, positive, expansive Leo, making us kind-hearted.

Saturn remains in responsible, shrewd, strong-willed Scorpio, until the end of 2014. It is now traveling Direct, enabling self expansion in some respects. Uranus remains in assertive, blunt, energetic, self-willed Aries, for several years, and can make us individualistic and rebellious, unexpected events or disruptive emotional matters, may distract us, or help us see things differently.

Uranus is currently travelling Retrograde until shortly before Christmas, helping us come up with ingenious ideas, with a need to use them creatively. Neptune remains in sensitive, intuitive Pisces for the foreseeable future, and helps us gradually develop more empathy, compassion, and build understanding, in a wide variety of ways, but also indicates a need to remain realistic.

Neptune is now traveling Retrograde until Mid December, indicating boundaries between reality and illusion may blur at times, causing possible confusion, with a need to look at people and situations realistically.

Pluto remains in Capricorn for quite a few years, so is a very long term influence, showing knowledge gradually acquired on deeper levels, with balance, & realistic ways of recycling & developing our intuitive knowledge further, to use practically. Pluto travels Retrograde until late September, with a relentless search for inner truth, furthering our self knowledge approached the right way.

Meditation ~ New Moon in Virgo

Aloha Family of Light !

As we step into this next  beautiful integration phase of  the Astrological sign turning towards Virgo,  we also welcome a powerful Manifestation New Moon cycle full of magic and promise.

We discover the essential task of Virgo in uniting our body, mind and spirit so that we become who we incarnated to be. This gives birth to our own savior–our inner Spirit,  integrating through self-knowledge–knowing who we are and who we are not. It has a lot to do with self-acceptance as well gifting love and complete acceptance of who we are.

~ YOU ARE THE LIGHTHOUSE ~

Virgo asks us to give that love and acceptance to ourselves, instead of patriarchy’s twisting of Virgo’s gift into self-criticism and impossible perfectionism.

A deep awakening of the energy coursing within our cellular memories the foundation and make-up of our divine temples of the body unearth the currents of magic that ebb and flow along in tune with the moon’s rhythm. As we combine this powerful force uniting them as one we co-create positive change and transform your life through the mysteries of the new moon.

The Dhammapada: The Buddha’s Path of Wisdom,
translated from the Pali by Acharya Buddharakkhita

I Ching ~ Week of August 25, 2014

SHENG#46         Sheng        Ascending

Above:     Kun           center of the Earth; the yin element supporting all things; responsiveness.

Below:      Sun           root, foundation; subtle penetration, like the wind; small, steady effort.

The Wisdom:

You are in a time of ascension
What you have been working for is on the way
Now simply be present
Be mindful of where you stand

This is your season of harvesting. Your harvest, in this case, consists of the ripe fruits of small and steady efforts. You have been paying attention to all the details, remaining steadfast to the principles of working for the greater good, and until now it seemed as if the fruits of your efforts have been elusive. Try as you know you must, to not have expectations, it is difficult not to have them. You have had expectations, which you have tried your best to quiet, of how your diligence would bring about a desired outcome. In your present situation your expectations are about to be humbled by the good fortune that is coming your way.

This is an excellent time to make the moves you have been holding in check, feeling that either the timing was not right or that those with influence and authority would not be receptive. Leave all worries behind.

It has seemed that in so many ways all the work and waiting have been interminable. But that was only your analytical mind interfering with the universal law of right timing. Patience and quiet nurturing are all that is needed now, whether in your relationship to your own inner self or in your projects, external relationships, and your connection with the Earth herself.

It is happening; no need to push it. What you have desired is coming your way. Don’t ask when—just take a look . . . it is now. Trust and faith is the powerful engine that will propel you forward in your quest for what is right and in harmony with the natural way of being.

.Quiet your heart and mind.
Allow the natural way to unfold.
 Be steady and don’t miss a step;
Progress and prosperity are assured.

All things that you have worked and wished for in life are moving forward, toward yours and the greater good. It is as if you are exactly synchronized with the calendar of your life path. The energies of the Earth and the universe are moving in harmony with you, with your actions and desires. Your intuition is at an extremely high level. Trust it and make your well-considered moves, whether in love, business, or in the care of our planet and all her beings. Bring all together and be the giver of love and life to your tribe, your family and your relationships.

Note well that while you may harvest the bounty that is available to you now, the benefit will be to return this energy in equal measure to the living organism of Gaia to which you are deeply rooted. This is your “family,” which has silently and elegantly supported and nurtured you so that you could get to this point of beneficial harvest. Keep feeding the whole, the oneness of which we are each a part.

Have confidence that you have done your work, that you have correctly nurtured yourself, your relationships, your tribe, or your project to this point. Have faith that your growth is assured if you allow everything to unfold without the judgment or interference of the critical, analytical mind. Refrain from picking things apart and just let the mind relax in its own vast, natural spaciousness.

This hexagram signals that your personal magic could not be at a higher and more powerful point. Your ideas will be well received by those around you. Externally, you will advance in your relationships and your career, and your words will be heard. You are part of a network that is connecting all good things for the benefit of yourself, your tribe, and the world.

Stay steady and remain humble. Meditate and take part in activities that keep you centered and grounded. By adhering to the higher laws, those of compassion, kindness, and integrity, what you will gain will remain, and any doubts about yourself will wash away like dust after a longed-for spring rain.

This week speak to the elements. Listen to the wind as it speaks to you, hear the waters as they nurture and teach you, celebrate fire as it burns away the dross. Taste of the Earth herself as she nurtures all sentient beings, and wear the air on your skin like a royal robe of ritual and celebration.

HERBALOGY — Evening Primrose Oil for PMS, diabetic neuropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, and more

primrosesA native North American wildflower, evening primrose is commonly called “evening star” because its bright yellow flowers open at dusk. It’s a favorite with herb and native plant gardeners and can grow up to 4 feet or 5 feet tall. The seeds are a rich source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid with wide-ranging health benefits.

Native Americans valued evening primrose both as a food and a medicine. They applied a poultice made from the plant to bruises to relieve swelling and made a tea from the root to ease coughs. European settlers took their cue from native peoples, using evening primrose to treat wounds, coughs, sore throats, and digestive upsets. In the 1980s, evening primrose soared in popularity when researchers discovered that its seeds are a gold mine of GLA, a compound rarely found in plants.

Evening primrose oil (EPO) is used to treat a variety of health problems caused by a deficiency in essential fatty acids. These include premenstrual syndrome (PMS), fibrocystic breast pain, eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetic neuropathy. Other conditions that evening primrose may help treat include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, attention deficit disorder, and ulcerative colitis.

GLA is essential for the production of prostaglandins, hormonelike compounds that influence almost every bodily system. Prostaglandins decrease inflammation, stimulate hormone production, and help regulate blood clotting, blood pressure, and PMS-related water retention. If the body is working properly, it converts omega-6 fatty acids (found in vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds) into GLA. But many factors can inhibit this conversion, including advancing age; a diet compromised by excessive saturated fats, trans fats, or alcohol; zinc deficiency; and some medical disorders, such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and cancer. Evening primrose oil supplies a direct source of GLA to the body, bypassing the need for conversion of omega-6s and helping to restore healthy levels of prostaglandins

In colonial America, evening primrose seeds were often substituted for poppy seeds in baking. More compelling is research supporting the use of evening primrose oil for diabetic neuropathy, a common complication of long-term diabetes that causes nerve damage in the legs, feet, arms, and hands. One double-blind study evaluated 111 people with diabetes for one year who were given either 480 mg of GLA daily or a placebo. The researchers found that those given GLA experienced significant improvement in neurological symptoms (Diabetes Care, 1993, vol. 16, no. 9).

GLA also has shown promise as an effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, a painful and disfiguring type of inflammatory arthritis. In a 1996 study, researchers gave 56 patients with active rheumatoid arthritis GLA supplements or a placebo. After six months of treatment, participants taking GLA experienced reduced arthritic symptoms (Arthritis and Rheumatism, 1996, vol. 39, no. 11).
