The hits just keep on coming when it comes to the health benefits of meditation. Research is now emerging that would justify implementing this practice within hospitals and schools (some already do) as well as including it in treatment recommendations for various diseases.

Not long ago, an eight week study conducted by Harvard researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) determined that meditation literally rebuilds the brains grey matter in just eight weeks. It was the very first study to document that meditation produces changes over time in the brain’s grey matter. Now, they’ve released another study showing that meditation can have a significant impact on clinical symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).  The study showed that elicitation of the relaxation response (a physical state of deep rest that changes the physical and emotional responses to stress) is a very big help.

The study comes out of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). This is the very first study where the use of the “relaxation response” was examined in these disorders, and the first to investigate the genomic effects of the relaxation response in individuals with any disorder. The report was published in the journal PLOS-ONE. (source)

Given the two studies cited above, and all of the other documented health benefits of meditation, this should open the door for more studies to examine the benefits of meditation for a wide range of diseases.

“Our results suggest exciting possibilities for further developing and implementing this treatment in a wider group of patients with gastrointestinal illness. Several studies have found that stress management techniques and other psychological interventions can help patients with IBS, at least in the short term; and while the evidence for IBD is less apparent, some studies have suggested potential benefits. What is novel about our study is demonstration of the impact of a mind/body intervention on the genes controlling inflammatory factors that are known to play a major role in IBD and possibly in IBS.” – Brandon Kuo of the gastrointestinal unit in the MGH Department of Medicine, co-lead author of the report. Health ~ A Million Ways That Lemons Can Save Your Life

America has known about lemons since at least the 16th century, when Christopher Columbus brought them to what is now Florida. Lemons (and limes) were very valuable at the time for the protection they offered against scurvy. During the Gold Rush in California, lemons were so popular and in such unbelievably high demand that people were willing to pay the unheard price of $1 each. This would be expensive even for today, but imagine that in the 1800’s!

Although high levels of vitamin C and alkalizing effects on the body are no doubt among the great reasons to always keep lemons around (or to plant your own tree) these sour fruits have a type of antioxidant known as flavonoids that can fight inflammation, heart disease, and cancer, according to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

The Ancient Egyptians thought that drinking the juice or eating lemons would protect you from poison. Although there are many health benefits to lemons and their juice, protection from poison might not be one of them, but they will certainly help to protect you from disease and infection, which can save your life. They are also powerful cleaning and beauty agents, which are almost as important, right?!

Well, although we might not have quite a million things listed here, it might seem like it. This list contains valuable information about how you can use lemons for your health, for cleaning, for beauty treatments, and more!

Keep reading to find out just how valuable lemons actually are and why people would pay a buck a piece for one!

Best Ayurvedic Tips for Weight Loss

Obesity is one of the most dreaded lifestyle ailments today and is spreading like an epidemic all across the world. Owing to slavery to the taste buds and lethargic living conditions, being obese and overweight is affecting all age groups and either sex. The main problem with weight gain is that not only does it affect the confidence and mental stability of the obese person (making him easy target to mockery), overweight and obesity lays foundation of many other serious diseases. No doubt, weight loss is much sought after by one and all.

Weight Loss in Ayurvedic Dosha TypesAccording to Ayurveda philosophy, Kapha type of individual (having more of water and earth in their constitution) is more likely to gain weight easily. Although, the Vata types having more of air and ether, would generally be skinny and devoid of much fat. The fire types or Pitta dosha personalities who are generally gifted with proportional body weight, could be gaining weight just in case they lose their balance.

In the case of weight gain or obesity, it is believed that the Kapha dosha gets accumulated which further slows down the fat metabolism and leads to the disease of obesity. Therefore, Ayurveda believes that of the three basic dosha types, those people who have more of Kaha dosha in their system generally have a low BMR and gain weight easily. Thus, for weight loss, the Kapha types need to be more strict and careful with themselves both in the terms of diet intake and undertaking exercise routine.

Health ~ Confirmed: Parabens Cross the Human Placenta and 4 Ways to Protect Your Baby, by Eleni Roumeliotou

Green Med Info | Research shows that prenatal exposure to parabens can cause long-term problems to the growing baby. We now know that parabens cross the human placenta. The good news is that there are ways to protect your developing baby.

Endocrine disruptors have been repeatedly associated with pregnancy and fetal complications in animals, but there is limited research about how these chemicals behave inside the human body. We now know that the omnipresent preservatives known as parabens can easily cross the human placenta and accumulate in the blood of the growing baby.

The US pilot study, which clarified this issue, was published in May 2015 and evaluated the levels of commonly used parabens in the blood of 50 pregnant women and upon delivery, in the blood of their babies (1). Parabens where found in 94% of women and their newborns. This makes sense, since it is estimated that parabens are included in approximately 22,000 products, so avoiding them is not exactly a piece of cake. However, the most impressive finding of this small study was the fact that in more than 50% of the cases, the babies had significantly higher amounts of the most popular paraben (methyl-paraben) in their blood than their mother did. The mean concentration of methyl-paraben in pregnant women was 20.41 ng/l, while newborn babies had a mean concentration of 36.54 ng/l. This is a significant difference and a whole lot of parabens for a newborn baby with immature kidneys and detoxification mechanisms.

There is plenty of research proving that prenatal exposure to parabens can cause long-term problems to the growing baby. As many endocrine disruptors, parabens mimic estrogen and affect the sensitive hormonal balance required for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Accurate hormone signals regulate the proper development of the baby during pregnancy, which justifies the fears that parabens can affect the baby´s health in the long-run.

The list of possible effects of parabens to babies is long. Selected research in animals suggests that prenatal exposure to parabens is linked to autistic-like behavioral symptoms in infants (4), impaired social behavior (5), decreased sperm number and motility later in life (6) and learning difficulties (7) among other problems. But this is not just about the babies; women can be harmed by parabens too.  Scientific research suggests that parabens may be linked to breast cancer, which is a reasonable concern, given the fact that inside the body, parabens act like a weak type of estrogen.

Tainted Science and Lack of Regulation

Since parabens are mainly found in cosmetics and personal care products, a considerable effort has been made by the industry to convince that parabens are practically non-toxic in the concentrations used in cosmetics. The latest report by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, which is exclusively funded by the Personal Care Products Council (the industry trade association), is worryingly reassuring the safety of parabens and indirectly promotes the use of parabens in cosmetics by setting very high safety threshold for adults and especially for infants (2,3). Unfortunately the specific report does not take into account the fact that people are exposed to a cocktail of parabens, rather than a single paraben, on a daily basis. In other words, there is no assessment of the additive and cumulative risk of multiple paraben exposure from daily use of multiple cosmetics and personal care products.

Bear in mind that parabens, and other endocrine disruptors (i.e. phthalates), are not regulated by the FDA, which essentially means that the cosmetics industry is unregulated when it comes to the ingredients of their products.

4 steps to limit parabens exposure

  1. Only choose cosmetics and personal care products, which explicitly state that they are “paraben-free”. If there is no indication of parabens in the label, this does not necessarily mean that they are not there.
  2. Lotions and perfumes are the kinds of products associated with high exposure to parabens. In general, parabens are essential for products with high water content (i.e. moisturizing lotions), which are prone to bacterial and/or fungal contamination. Opt for formulas based on less water, such as bar lotions, solid perfumes, which require less preservatives.
  3. If possible, buy preservative-free cosmetics in small batches and use them quickly. Products with natural preservatives, such as grapefruit seed oil and vitamin E are also a good choice.
  4. Foods with a long shelf life, such as beer, syrups, salad dressings, jams, canned foods, tortilla shells, frozen desserts and other frozen dairy products also contain parabens. Eating fresh food and cooking your meals from whole, local ingredients is a great way to avoid parabens and a whole group of other unhealthy chemicals.

Paradigm Shift ~ “What Is Infant Circumcision?”

What is infant circumcision? Why is the practice common in U.S. hospitals and not in other countries? What does it remove and how does that affect the child? Does scientific data suggest that circumcision has benefits? What are the potential complications? How does it affect sexuality? Is it a medical procedure or a social surgery? If it’s unnecessary surgery, what about contemporary bioethics principles?

Through both a review of scientific literature and a discussion of the human cost of the procedure, this presentation explores these questions from the perspectives of the child, the adult survivor, the parent, and the practitioner.

Ryan is a parent, a biophysicist, an Assistant Professor of Physics and Oncology at Georgetown University, and also a volunteer who supports parents and families. Over the last 10 years he has been studying the medicalization of childbirth in U.S. hospitals.

Cancer $creening FAIL

Should we be looking for disease in people who don’t have any symptoms? A large new study indicates the answer is NO.

Subject to an increasingly expansive disease screening programs, unsuspecting healthy individuals are being transformed into patients every day. Massive ‘awareness raising’ campaigns funded by industries that either cause disease by creating and promoting harmful products, or make profit from the diseases by diagnosing and treating them, dominate mainstream culture, with their tentacles reaching deep into both private and public (i.e. governmental) sectors. Think of KFC’s now defunct “Buckets for the Cure” campaign, or Susan G. Komen’s stamp of approval on a Fracking Drill bit supposed to help find a cure. Or, how about our very own Whitehouse saturating itself with Pink light during Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

What do these ‘awareness raising’ efforts have in common? They almost all funnel the miseducated masses into fear-driven screening programs that promise to ‘save lives’ by ‘detecting disease early’ instead of focusing on removing and/or lessening the preventable causes of disease. Why not employ real prevention and focus on root cause resolution, which is to say, dietary changes, detoxification, and various modifiable lifestyle factors such as stress reduction — none of which, incidentally, require pharmaceutical intervention. In the case of cancer, the primary focus should be on removing exposure to cancer-causing agents (carcinogens).

But cancer awareness raising campaigns intentionally avoud the term “carcinogen,” as removal of these primary drivers were an irrelevant consideration. The problem is that conventional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation are themselves carcinogenic, and should be avoided in principle by anyone looking to prevent, treat and/or reverse cancer, undermining the cancer industry’s main cash cow for the past half century. Additionally, if you focus on identifying and removing the cause, you can’t get people to throw billions of dollars into fund-raising campaigns by promising a cure that only exists as a possibility in the future, and requires ceaseless cash offerings and supplication to the biotech, pharmaceutical and medical ‘Gods.’

She sat on an already-delayed flight to see her in-laws, the plane had been taxiing for takeoff over an hour, a baby was screaming in the row behind her, and a traffic delay to the airport meant she had missed breakfast.

“Somebody needs to whip out her gratitude journal ASAP,” I texted back playfully, but I understood her frustration.

Thankfully, most mornings aren’t quite so hectic, but everyone knows that sinking “there goes my day” mentality.

You can’t control the weather, traffic, or your irate boss, but you can develop a morning ritual that keeps you resilient to whatever life throws your way.

One thing I’ve discovered about fitness and nutrition professionals: We almost all keep a specific morning routine that focuses, motivates, and connects us with our higher purpose. I took an informal poll among my healthcare friends. These five things make our mornings — really, our entire days — more sane and productive.

Recipe ~ Ella’s Sweet Potato Brownies

sweet potato brownies-850x692

“Sweet potatoes are incredible: they’re bursting with nutritional goodness with all their antioxidants, and their anti-inflammatory properties, as well as being awesome blood sugar-regulators. Each cup contains an almost unrivaled amount of vitamin A, with more than four times your daily need of this antioxidant boosting vitamin, which is essential for strengthening your body’s immunity against infection.

Their bright color also doses you up on anti-inflammatories which have been shown to reduce inflammation on the brain and nerve tissue. Each serving also contains lots of wonderful fibre, which gives each brownies a ‘slow burning’ quality, meaning their energy is used up much more slowly than low-fibre carbohydrates – like normal brownies, so you’ll be fuller, more energized and more satisfied for way longer! So if you needed an excuse to eat brownies then here it is! They’re healthy!

Don’t forget that raw cacao is also a superfood as it is such an insanely rich source of antioxidants, one of the best in the world, as well as being packed with a number of other beneficial nutrients: manganese, which helps oxygenate the blood; magnesium, which helps maintain healthy bodily nerves, muscles and bones; and sulphur, which builds strong nails and hair, and promotes beautiful skin.” -Ella Woodward

Ingredients

Makes 10 brownies

  • 2 medium to large sweet potatoes
  • 2/3 of a cup of ground almonds
  • 1/2 a cup of buckwheat flour (brown rice flour will also work)
  • 14 medjool dates
  • 4 tablespoons of raw cacao
  • 3 tablespoons of pure maple syrup
  • a pinch of salt

Preparation

1. Start by pre-heating the oven to 350ºF, then peel the sweet potatoes. Cut them into chunks and place into a steamer for about twenty minutes, until they become really soft.

2. Once they are perfectly soft and beginning to fall apart remove them and add them to a food processor with the pitted dates – this will form one of the sweetest, creamiest, most delicious mixes ever!

3. Put the remaining ingredients into a bowl, before mixing in the sweet potato date combination. Stir well.

4. Place into a lined baking dish and cook for about twenty minutes, until you can pierce the brownie cake with a fork bringing it out dry. Remove the tray and allow it to cool for about ten minutes – this is really important as it needs this time to stick together! Remove the brownies from the tray, leaving it another few minutes before cutting them into squares – then dig in and enjoy!

10 Surprisingly Healthy Foods Your Grandparents Ate That You Should Too

When was the last time you enjoyed fresh homemade baked bread?
When was the last time you enjoyed fresh homemade baked bread?

In generations prior, our grandparents were consuming foods that were healthier than the pesticide ridden, genetically modified and hormone injected food that is rampant today. Before big box food companies became money hungry and clever, there was a plethora of foods being distributed that were pure and non manipulated.

To increase their profit margin, increase the longevity of produce lasting and increase the size of harvests, many companies today have resorted to methods like using heavy pesticides and genetically modifying plants to make their crops more resistant to bugs and more resilient against the elements. In other words, the focus shifting from creating healthful, quality foods to creating adulterated foods that endanger the health of the masses.

Over the years, the nutritional villain has been deemed many different things; two of which are fat and sugar. This was simply a way to direct attention away from the actual issue, which is the quality of our food. Merely all whole foods can be eaten in moderation with no health risks.

However, eating too much of foods that are pumped full of chemicals is the true health detriment. Our grandparents may have seemingly indulged too much; but the contrary is true. Our bodies need fat and sugar as two of the crucial macronutrients in our diets.

Thus, they might have eaten meals that have a significant fat and/or sugar intake; but their bodies were able to remain balanced and healthy because the pesticides, GMO’s and hormones from animal products were not an issue.

Health ~ An Introduction to Biodynamic Agriculture

biodynamic1
Based on “An Introduction To Biodynamic Agriculture”,
originally published in Stella Natura

What is Biodynamic Agriculture? In seeking an answer let us pose the further question: Can the Earth heal itself, or has the waning of the Earths vitality gone too far for this? No matter where our land is located, if we are observant we will see sure signs of illness in trees, in our cultivated plants, in the water, even in the weather.

Organic agriculture rightly wants to halt the devastation caused by humans; however, organic agriculture has no cure for the ailing Earth. From this the following question arises: What was the original source of vitality, and is it available now?

Biodynamics is a science of life-forces, a recognition of the basic principles at work in nature, and an approach to agriculture which takes these principles into account to bring about balance and healing. In a very real way, then, Biodynamics is an ongoing path of knowledge rather than an assemblage of methods and techniques.

biodynamic_affinities-scaled-500
Biodynamics is part of the work of Rudolf Steiner, known as anthroposophy – a new approach to science which integrates precise observation of natural phenomena, clear thinking, and knowledge of the spirit. It offers an account of the spiritual history of the Earth as a living being, and describes the evolution of the constitution of humanity and the kingdoms of nature. Some of the basic principles of Biodynamics are:

Broaden Our Perspective

Just as we need to look at the magnetic field of the whole earth to comprehend the compass, to understand plant life we must expand our view to include all that affects plant growth. No narrow microscopic view will suffice. Plants are utterly open to and formed by influences from the depths of the earth to the heights of the heavens. Therefore our considerations in agriculture must range more broadly than is generally assumed to be relevant.

Reading the Book of Nature

Everything in nature reveals something of its essential character in its form and gesture. Careful observations of nature – in shade and full sun, in wet and dry areas, on different soils, will yield a more fluid grasp of the elements. So eventually one learns to read the language of nature. And then one can be creative, bringing new emphasis and balance through specific actions.

Practitioners and experimenters over the last seventy years have added tremendously to the body of knowledge of Biodynamics.

Cosmic Rhythms

The light of the sun, moon, planets and stars reaches the plants in regular rhythms. Each contributes to the life, growth and form of the plant. By understanding the gesture and effect of each rhythm, we can time our ground preparation, sowing, cultivating and harvesting to the advantage of the crops we are raising. The Stella Natura calendar offers an introduction to this study.

The Life of the Soil

Biodynamics recognizes that soil itself is alive, and this vitality supports and affects the quality and health of the plants that grow in it. Therefore, one of Biodynamics fundamental efforts is to build up stable humus in our soil through composting.

A New View of Nutrition

We gain our physical strength from the process of breaking down the food we eat. The more vital our food, the more it stimulates our own activity. Thus, Biodynamic farmers and gardeners aim for quality, and not only quantity.

Chemical agriculture has developed short-cuts to quantity by adding soluble minerals to the soil. The plants take these up via water, thus by-passing their natural ability to seek from the soil what is needed for health, vitality and growth. The result is a deadened soil and artificially stimulated growth.

Biodynamics grows food with a strong connection to a healthy, living soil.

Medicine for the Earth: Biodynamic Preparations

Rudolf Steiner pointed out that a new science of cosmic influences would have to replace old, instinctive wisdom and superstition. Out of his own insight, he introduced what are known as biodynamic preparations.

Naturally occurring plant and animal materials are combined in specific recipes in certain seasons of the year and then placed in compost piles. These preparations bear concentrated forces within them and are used to organize the chaotic elements within the compost piles. When the process is complete, the resulting preparations are medicines for the Earth which draw new life forces from the cosmos.

Two of the preparations are used directly in the field, one on the earth before planting, to stimulate soil life, and one on the leaves of growing plants to enhance their capacity to receive the light. Effects of the preparations have been verified scientifically.

The Farm as the Basic Unit of Agriculture

In his Agriculture course, Rudolf Steiner posed the ideal of the self-contained farm – that there should be just the right number of animals to provide manure for fertility, and these animals should, in turn, be fed from the farm.

We can seek the essential gesture of such a farm also under other circumstances. It has to do with the preservation and recycling of the life-forces with which we are working. Vegetable waste, manure, leaves, food scraps, all contain precious vitality which can be held and put to use for building up the soil if they are handled wisely. Thus, composting is a key activity in Biodynamic work.

The farm is also a teacher, and provides the educational opportunity to imitate natures wise self-sufficiency within a limited area. Some have also successfully created farms through the association of several parcels of non-contiguous land.

Economics Based on Knowledge of the Job

Steiner emphasized the absurdity of agricultural economics determined by people who have never actually raised crops or managed a farm.

A new approach to this situation has been developed which brings about the association of producers and consumers for their mutual benefit. The Community Supported Agriculture movement was born in the Biodynamic movement and is spreading rapidly. Gardens or farms gather around them a circle of supporters who agree in advance to meet the financial needs of the enterprise and its workers, and these supporters each receive a share of the produce as the season progresses. Thus consumers become connected with the real needs of the Earth, the farm and the Community; they rejoice in rich harvests, and remain faithful under adverse circumstances.

Day 6 ~ 7-day Desserts and Snacks Challenge ~ Orange Chocolate Fudge

orang choc fudgeHave you ever had orange flavoured chocolate? I know that the combination may sounds a little strange at first, but trust me when I say that the bright, clean and crisp flavours of citrus really adds a special sparkle to the natural earthiness of chocolate.

These fudge squares are much easier to make than traditional fudge, and does not require a candy thermometer or precise temperatures. All you need to do is melt a little chocolate, blend a few other ingredients, mix and you’re good to go!

I know that the instructions tell you to wait until this glorious mixture is cooled and set before consuming, but if you are a little too impatient to wait for that, we will understand.

Orange Chocolate Fudge

Apple Crisp ~ If you want info about this challenge and the shopping list, click on the image.

Apple crisp was one of the first desserts I ever learned to make on my own when I was a little girl. I have fond memories of standing in my grandmothers kitchen in the summer time, chopping apples, mixing the butter into the oats and watching as my grandmother pull  recipes together without ever touching a measuring cup.

As I grew up and began eating a healthier diet, I started to experiment with different ingredients in order to clean up the apple crisp my grandmother taught me to make. I found that apple crisp is one of the best desserts out there if you are in the mood to experiment, because it is not an exact science like baking is. Have fun with this basic recipe, adding in anything that you think would taste good to you and your family.

Apple Crisp

Ingredients:

  • 3 apples, cored and chopped
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup dried shredded coconut
  • ¼ cup chopped walnuts
  • ½ cup almond butter
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla powder or extract
  • pinch sea salt

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9×9 baking dish with parchment paper.

2. Toss diced apples with 1 tsp cinnamon and pinch of sea salt. Place in lined baking dish.

3. Combine remaining ingredients. Mix in a large bowl with your hands until a crumble forms. Place crumble on top of chopped apples in an even layer.

4. Bake for 30-40 minute or until apples are fully cooked and fork tender.  Allow to cool and enjoy!

Day 4 ~ 7-Day Dessert and Snack Challenge ~ Simple Raw Apricot Crumble

Simple Raw Apricot Crumble
Simple Raw Apricot Crumble ~ If you want info about this challenge and the shopping list, click on the image.

Baking can be fun, but sometimes you just want a simple dessert that comes together quickly and does not require that you heat up the whole house by turning the oven on. If you are in a warmer climate or it is still summer weather where you are right now, I have a feeling you are going to really enjoy todays recipe.

This crumble takes advantage of the natural sweetness of dates and fresh apricots or peaches to create a stunning dessert that will take you less time to make than it would for you to preheat your oven. You can also use peaches, plums, pears, nectarines or even thinly sliced apples in this recipe if you do not have access to fresh apricots. Get creative and have fun with this one!
Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cup Fresh dates, pitted and chopped
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 4 tbsp dried shredded coconut
  • 4 tbsp maple syrup
  • 7-8 apricots, pitted and diced or 2-3 large peaches
  • 1 tsp vanilla powder or extract
  • 2 tsp cinnamon powder
  • pinch sea salt

Directions:

1. Place ½ cup dates, 2 tbsp maple syrup, ½ tsp vanilla, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 pinch salt and 1 apricot in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour mixture over remaining chopped apricots, toss and set aside.

2. Place walnuts in a blender or food processor and pulse a few times to chop. Add your remaining dates and pulse until a sticky mixture forms.

3. Remove date walnut mixture from blender or food processor and place in a bowl. Add coconut, remaining maple syrup, remaining vanilla, remaining cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Combine with your hands.

4. Crumble date walnut mixture over apricot mixture. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours. Enjoy!

5. Makes 4-6 portions – can be frozen for 1-2 months if well sealed.

Recipe ~ Maple Balsamic Quinoa Delight Salad

Maple Balsamic Quinoa Delight Salad
Maple Balsamic Quinoa Delight Salad

Quinoa is a nutritional powerhouse. Packed with fibre, carbohydrates, amino acids (the little structures that make up proteins), iron and b vitamins, this little pseudo grain is great if you are looking for a hit of usable energy.

It is much easier to digest and absorb than traditional grains like barley and wheat because it does not contain any gluten, and its chemical structure is much simpler. This salad is light, refreshing and tasty, but won’t leave you feeling hungry again within the hour.

Salad Ingredients:

½ cup dry quinoa
1 cup water
½ small beet, shredded
1 small carrot, shredded
½ small cucumber, sliced or diced
2 cups spring mix

Dressing Ingredients:

2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp coconut oil
½ tsp mustard
pinch Himalayan salt
pinch pepper

Directions:

Place water in a pot over high heat. Bring to a boil. Add your quinoa and reduce heat to medium low. Cook until quinoa has absorbed water. Allow to cool. Combine cooled quinoa and remaining salad ingredients in a bowl or on a plate and set aside. Combine dressing ingredients in a personal blender or high speed blender and blend until smooth. You can also simply whisk dressing ingredients with a fork into a small bowl. Pour dressing over salad, toss and enjoy!

*Note: It can save you a lot of time to make the quinoa the night before and store it in the fridge!

Day 3 ~ 7-Day Desserts and Snacks Challenge ~ Hot Fudge Sundae (Makes 1 serving)

banana_sundae
Banana Sundae ~ If you want info about this challenge and the shopping list, click on the image.

Is there anything more decadent than a warm, chocolate sauce drizzled over cool, sweet, creamy ice cream? Today’s dessert is going to have you licking your bowl clean – and don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone.

The sauce for this recipe is super fudgy and will have you forgetting all about the sugar and chemical filled chocolate sauces of your past. And you may even discover that you enjoy the way banana ice cream makes you feel so much more than the way regular ice cream makes you feel, that you make it a permanent fixture in your life!

When I was first transitioning towards a whole food diet, I actually ate banana ice cream with a different sauce every night for about six months, and never got tired of it! I am sure that you are going to love it was much as I do.

Ingredients:

  • 3 bananas – 2 frozen, 1 fresh
  • 2 tbsp cacao or cocoa or carob powder
  • 1 tbsp coconut or cacao butter
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • pinch sea salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla powder or extract
  • 2 tbsp chopped nuts of choice

Directions:
